So don't know how to word this question  But i'll try my best! I'm basically trying to plan out hacking routes on google earth. You can draw a path on it and it tells you how long it is. Now, i know kind of average speeds for gaits (4mph walk, 8-10mph trot, 15mph ish canter) and my question is - how do I therefore plan how long each hacking route will last?

I'm so awful at maths, it's wrecking my head trying to think it through :o :o It depends on how much trotting/cantering you do I know I know.. but e.g. how long would it take to walk and trot 5 miles

Sorry for such a blummin rubbish post! My education was so worth the money ay  :D XxX

have you tried using 'map my run' website. Its fab and tells you your exact distances, then you can just time yourself and work out how fast per minute your going!

www.mapmyrun.com

however in answer to your original question I think it will take you about 45 minutes to do 5 miles at 50% walk 50% trot.. you could work it out by...

if you ride at 8 miles an hour divide 60 by 8 = 7.5 so you'll cover 1 mile in 7.5 mins.
if trot all the way so maybe 12 miles an hour 60 divide by 12 = 1 mile in 5 minutes.

hope that helps!!

Speed = (distance) divided by (time)
Time = (distance) divided by (speed)
Distance = (speed) times (time)

eg. 5miles divided by 4mph = 4/5 = 0.8 hours / 48 minutes
5 miles divided by 10mph = 5/10 = 0.5 hours / 30 minutes

Hope that helps :)

If you walk at 4 miles per hour, then in an hour you'll travel 4 miles.

So.... over a distance of 5 miles, it'll take one hour plus one fifth of an hour (ie an extra 15 mins)

So, for a hack in walk of 5 miles, it'll take about an hour and a quarter.

If you trot at 8 mph, it'll take half that time (since you're moving at twice the speed) ie half of 75 mins - approx 38 mins.

so, to walk and trot a distance of 5 miles will take somewhere between 38 mins and 75 mins, depending on how much of each pace you use (and not allowing for traffic, road junctions, spooky moments, meeting your friend for a chat and all the other unknowns on hacks :P !!)

another way to look at it
in walk, you do 4 miles in 60 mins, so you would do 1 mile in 15 mins and any walk distance can be multiplied up
in trot, you do 8 miles in 60 mins, so you would do 1 mile in 7.5 mins and any trot distance can be multiplied up

Sorry, another stupid question. I've done distance divided by speed to find out the time, im left with 0.427. Am i right in thinking thats 42 minutes and 7 seconds? :o

No, that would mean 0.427 of an hour... Which is about 25 minutes... And I'm trying to workout how to explain how to work that out and struggling...!! Sorry!

EDIT: Because there are 60 minutes in an hour you need to multiply the 0.427 by 60... Which is 26 minutes!

Oooh I see. Thank you!

I'm shocked at how truly thick I am!

4 mile road hack around the block takes 90 minutes. 8 mile hack of half road and half bridlepaths takes...90 minutes.

Not much help am I ?
Can only explain it by the fact that I leave the yard at 1.30pm and have to pick littley up from school at 3.20pm.

It doesn't seem to be working :-( All I get is the option to change the settings to metric and English and that's it. Nothing else happens when I click on the icon. I'm also looking at the website on my pc and have logged in but can't see anywhere to choose horseriding or how to start it. Sorry to be stupid, and for hijacking this post!

Trying to remember what it did the first time I logged in.
I seem to remember having to choose some settings and put my weight and height and email address and create an account.

Once it's set up when you start it you get some icons which spin round if I use the pad on the blackberry and one is New Work out. Click on that and spin it to horseriding and then start.

When you finished, left click to end and then left click again to upload.
