Our border terrier Katy came to us from a friend's mum (who is terminally ill and could no longer look after her). This lady was a lifelong dog breeder and showed dogs too (not BTs). Katy is a pedigree, but this is a world I know very little about, only having had mutts before.

We are not going to breed from Katy (she is being spayed shortly) and I doubt we will show her (other than fun local shows), but we have the Kennel Club papers to transfer ownership, which I guess we should do.

Her name on the papers is currently T******d Z**a at P*********e but obviously she is no longer at this kennel. As we aren't breeders and don't have a kennel name, can we just ignore this or do need to do a change of name too to remove the 'at P*********e' part?

Just ignore it, no need to change it unless you want too.
Our last female was A*** Nanci at F** and neither A or F was our kennel name - the F people had bought her to show from the A people but she turned into a bit of a heifer :o so we got her.

She was just a pet so no need to change it, we showed her a couple of times for fun but whacking another kennel name on top of that would have been silly. Know very few people who go to the bother of changing names now TBH. Don't know if you can remove kennel names anyway, only add them.

We had 2 Lancashire Heelers with fancy names but we didnt show or breed and we gave them pet names and that went on their vaccination card. The only thing I would suggest is if she is chipped is to get it transferred to your name.

Well done for adopting her.:)

If you're only planning on doing companion dog shows then I wouldn't bother changing anything, you only need to provide the pet name of the dog.

I am however toying with having the trophy one of mine won at a CDS this year engraved with a silly made-up posh name instead of just his pet name. :p

Just do the transfer of ownership and make sure microchip details are changed also. :)

Ditto everyone above. You cannot actually remove any part of her name, but you could add on if you had a registered affix. The most important thing is if she is chipped get that transferred to you, as for the KC registration it would make sense to transfer that to but you would be surprised how many people don't. A few years back I got a print out from the KC showing all the dogs I had bred over the years and I would say 75 % of them were still in my name, despite having gone to new homes at 8 weeks old!

No need to sent the KC papers in for transfer but do make sure the microchip is in your name. No one uses the pedigree names outside of the show circuit or for researching pedigrees.

There isn't a need but its nice to do :D Plus if littermate owners try to get in touch for any reason (health for example or loss of their dog) then they can write to the KC and forward a letter to you.
