Applied my first coat of pig oil this week to Ches legs. It is working brilliantly at keeping the mud away. My question is how often to apply it and should I wash off the residue and start again or just keep topping up. I put it on on Monday morning and today there is still a light shine to his legs and no mud has stuck so far. Also, does anyone paint it over the hooves as well, last year we had a bit of an issue with keeping shoes on. His hooves are in much better condition now and I apply a moisturiser twice a day, would pig oil be too drying on the hoof wall, which is the only place any mud has stuck too.

Is Ches a hairy horse - if so, put on once a week to ten days and then leave. If not blessed with lots of hair, then I would put on at least every other day and again don't wash out.

You can also put a little on a cloth and wipe over the bits that stick out from under rugs to have mud slide off - once a week is normally ok and don't plaster it on. Avoid under the saddle unless you like seeing the world upside down

I would be careful about hooves, though in winter not such a problem as they get plenty of moisture. Certainly no worse than normal hoof oils.

Finally if you are using to prevent MF, if you put sulphur in it, it will be more effective. If you want a huge PM on the stuff, PM me and I will send it to you.

I use it on my Turbo's legs as the field looks like the Somme and just re-apply when i think its needed. That can be as much as every second day. I don't wash it off as I think the benefit is from it accumulating so i need to use less each time. If the mud is really bad I'll give them a quick wash with a wet brush and dry them as well as possible and whack more oil on.

I've run out of pig oil so using baby oil just now and it seems to be doing okay but the pig oil stays on the hair longer as its lighter.

Last winter I bought some net-tex Mud Away which was briliant, but expensive. Does pig oil do the same job, and is it cheaper? I have a feeling my feed merchant stocks it. I have one TB with fine hair and a WB/ID with longish curly hair, but not a 'fro like a heavy horse

Theresa, would you mind PM'ing me your MF remedy please as one of mine was plagued last year.

My field isn't just like the Somme, it's like the Somme after someone has churned their tractor though it a few times for good measure. Yum

Sorry for post-hijack

I used it on my fine skinned WB and TB's last winter and found I needed to top it up every 2nd or 3rd day. No need to remove the previous application each time. You'll know when to do it as their legs will come in slighly dirtier than previously, where the mud's starting to cling again. Fabulous stuff!

Be sure to ask Teresa_F for her great fact sheet and useage instructions

nowlovesmares, I started using it after Theresas recommendation last year, just be sure to do a patch test first, it can irritate some horses although Che (a TB) is fine with it. I paid £20 for a huge tin from feed merchant and am still using the same tin so good value for money. I pour a little into an old supplement pot and apply with a sponge. Theresa, thanks for your input, great advice as usual, had your fact sheet last year, just couldnt remember whether I should be washing off every so often!
