My nearly 5 month old collie x (Stevie) has been dry and clean at night for about a month, maybe slightly longer, but the last 2 nights I have come down to wee and poo...... He was a bit under the weather at the weekend and off his food for 24 hours but is now full of himself and eating as usual. He does poo a lot generally and it is sometimes a bit soft (sorry if TMI!).

I take him out about 10/10:30pm and he often does both (did last night) but when I came down at just after 6am he had done both and didn't go when I took him out. When he's dry I take him straight out and he needs it!

Now, is this a blip or do I need to do anything? He's going close to the door and I'm not making any fuss about it, just cleaning up after I've taken him into the garden.

Am I worrying over nothing? I kind of assumed that once they were clean at night they stayed clean - spot the first time puppy owner!! Any advice gratefully received, thanks guys.

I would say it was a blip, it is very common for young dogs to master the training but frequently had the odd accident, I would not stress at all, maybe if he was unwell and off his food, he would have had an empty tummy for those days and then having some food on his tummy after a period of not(hope that makes sense) has disturbed his routine enough to disturb his toilet habit.
If he passes feaces alot and it's mostly soft I would think of trying him on another/better quality diet, from a good food sourse u should see less out put and a nice firm motion

If he carries on passing motions try feeding the last meal if u feed more then one (earlier) and make it the lighter meal of the day, and offer a measured amount of water for over night, this will help him to hold a little longer.

I wouldn't worry about it, sounds like he just had an upset tummy. Unfortunately 'accidents' will always happen with dogs. Some dogs will give you a little signal when they are desperate to go out, but obviously that doesn't help if it's the middle of the night!

I think you were right to not make a big deal out of it.

Thanks guys, I'm applying my common sense having had 2 children so I was hoping it was just a blip - it was the 2 nights running that threw me a bit!

He's on Chudleys Junior but he does eat all kind of stuff from the floor when he's outside which can't help his tummy really..... He will eat poo as well if he can, which is truely disgusting!!!

Hopefully he will get over this and go clean again. Thanks again for the advice x

As the others said it was probably just a blip. You didn't mention what time he has his last meal of the day so apologies if this irrelevant but when my lurcher was a pup he wasn't fed after 6pm. Any later than that and he'd wake me up at 3am wanting the toilet

but if he'd been downstairs with our other dogs he'd have gone in the kitchen.

He has food ad-hoc becuase he's on dry food, I leave it down for him. Although yesterday I didn't replenish his bowl after 7pm. He was clean and dry last night so hopefully it was a blip and he'll sort it out again. I'd got quite used to no mess and a pup bursting to go out!!

Thanks again for the advice xx
