question about rotties?

Just wondering for those of you who know/own one- do they ALL guard? even just a little bit ?

I have a 7 month old rottie who we've brought up to be soppy as our lab. He'll stand out in the garden barking at anything suspicious but when it comes to meeting strangers his whole posture is "low" and slinks around them, then when they move away hes alert again.
Also i was walking him this evening when a tiny terrier ran to the gate and snarled at him. He literally tried to run away he was terrified! Calmed down as we walked on though .

So is he a wimp because he's only 7 months or do you think he will stay this way?
(and no i dont want to enourage him to guard or be aggressive i'm purely curious)
 
Only experience I have with Rotties is as 2 yard dogs. Tia you would not get out of the car unless you knew her name- seriously guarding her property, not helped by Jade- who would lick you to death given half the chance.

Both brought up in the same way on the yard- but from different parents/litters.
 
My rottie is a big sweetheart, loves everybody and was a show dog so is used to being handled by strangers but when someone knocks at the door she could bark the place down! I also believe she would maul anyone who attacked me. The very vast majority of them have guarding instincts. Your wee man is still a baby, once he gets a bit more confident he should man up a bit! Love them as a breed, amazing dogs :D
 
He's x st Bernard. But he's soo trainable. I have been doing whistle work with.my other dog and Dylan the pup has picked up a stop which is much more reliable than the dog I'm attempting to train without directly training him. He was just about in the garden etc. Oh and always has to have something in his mouth is that a rottie thing? I think the next 6months will show if he will guard as at the moment anyone who he meets in and out if the house are greeted with a tail of mass destruction and a smile.
 
Shame Cayla is so far she has a lovely rottie (complete with tail of mass destruction) up for re homing. I have my 2 fab breeds under one roof I'm v lucky. (labrador and rottweilers I have two x breeds)

I dread to think of the damage my rottie could do with a tail!
 
They do indeed act and look the part but beneath the surface they are mostly soft as butter and love and thrive off cuddls and affection, suppose thas the point really, my girl is the most fierce guarder you would meet (fab for me cos I work lone shifts) and yet she is the most placid and most well behaved you will meet too.
We have 2 for rehome, one is with me now (cos he is goin o his new hom at he weekend) a young dope of a male with tail:D and it never stops, he loves everybody, same with the older male with atal we have in the escu. They realy are the most fab all round dogs you could wish to have and ver bidable in the right hands, I am a total rotti convert, after losing my spherd bitch (had shepherds al my life) theonly large dog in mams rescue was a female rotti, I took her and she is a joy to own, infact we are inseperable:)

mine has one! luckily it doesnt do too much damage as he holds it curled up over his back (a breed trait i gather)

love them :D

nice to know he should man up a bit as he grows! lol but yes would definitely have another, they're so trainable very intelligent :D
 
my vet said that rotties do not mature untill they are 18 months,whilst small dogs can be mature at 12 months.

(mine has a big kangaroo tail :) )
 
Re tail over back, dylans does this but if he's thinking something along the lines of "mmmmm chickens Chase time Damn Mums tied me up" his tail goes straight with the tip kinked down.
