Question about sweetitch. Help!

Fella has mild sweetitch which is dealt with very effectively in general by his boett rug. However, the one place he suffers is on his sheath. He can't have one of the rugs that covers that area being a gelding, and I don't know what to do about it. He cocks one of his back legs up and chews it with his teeth it is so itchy - he has cuts on it from biting it! Any idea about how to reduce his uncomfortableness greatfully recieved!
 
Whatever you do, do not put anything that contains Benzyl Benzoate on the sheath. BB is great stuff and works well, but should never be used near mucas membranes as it can cause a severe burning sensation and cause a lot of discomfort. Just put BB or midge repellent around the sheath area. I believe tea tree oil might work as a soothing ointment.
 
i have never had a horse with sweet itch myself but in your situation i would try maybe some aloe vera as its very soothing, or and de-itch cream of some kind that you can safely apply in that area and isnt going to irritate the skin
 
The sweet itch society sell somthing called gold ointment it is very greasy and it forms a barrier to keep them off, if you mix some of this with sudecrem and smear it on his sheath and the insides of his back legs it will help it heal and also prevent the little buggars from biting him, once it has healed up just apply the ointment every other day.
My pony bit his sheath last year till it bled and it got very swollen, i was worried about putting creams on his shaeth as its a very sensative area, but this stuff is brilliant.
if you ring thr society they will advise you they are very helpfull. My boys sheath healed with in the week and never had a problem with it agai for the rest of the season.
Its waterproof as well

I sympathise...its the one area I struggle with with my boy. That and his face.
I can highly recommend the Avon Skin so Soft fly spray recipe found in this thread here...try Thereasa-F's recipe. Its great, smells good, keeps them clean which I think helps and is a good barrier against the midges. Its also cheap...watch out for the bath oil on offer...so you can be really liberal with it!!

nettex summer fly cream ( not sure that's exactly the name of it)
contains repellent and a soother for the irritated skin. it looks like butter (bright yellow) put plenty on you don't need to re apply for a couple of days.
i've found its helped my itchy gelding.
 
My mare suffers with severe sweetitch, and like your boy she cuts herself when biting around her teets, i use and have done for the last 3 years with great success, good old vaseline/petroleum jelly, you can get a big tub from wilco or a store like that for under £2 and smother him in it once a day and it will act as a barrier and a soother. let us know how you get on.

there are a lot of creams out there but a lot of them are not susitable for sensitive areas like that i would just use aloe vera and tea tree mixed very soothing and delicate!
