Question For all the Chicken People... Prolapse!!

Help !!

I have a 6 month old hen who has a small prolaspse, happended yesterday. I pushed it back in gently and it went back in fine, 10 mins later it was back.

I have put her in a dark rabbit hutch with just corn and water to try and stop her laying ??

I'm not really sure what else to do for her, Is this somrthing that does fix or would it be kinder to PTS now.

Please help

We had one that arrived from the battery cages with a prolapse, we tried to push it back but it wouldn't stay, took her to the vets and the vet did it and it was fine, she lived very happily for several years (and laid) until the fox killed her. The vet charged about £9 but that was about 4 years ago and I don't think they charged a consult fee because of the circumstances. Try one of the poultry forums (practical poultry) as they may be able to give you more advice about how to get it to stay in. I think it depends from case to case whether it works or not.
 
Thank you for the reply, I had thought of taking her to my local vets but they are really not very good with chickens, they don't see them enough...

If you put on a glove (well, you don't have to but I would!) and smother your finger in a haemmoroid cream and work it all well back in that should help. The dark box and just corn and water is good. If its not very far out and undamaged you may well be able to fix it yourself, failing that you need a chicken friendly vet, where abouts are you? Theres a list in the back of Practical Poultry mag and I can look one up for you.
 
Good luck, she is young so that is on her side. You could perhaps have a look to see if you have any exotic/zoo vets that may be able to help or if you have any local egg producers they would be able to tell you which vet they use.
 
Thank you for your help, she is booked in tonight. Hopefully they will be able to sort.

I put it back in ( With gloves ) properly but it just came back out. I think I could feel an egg there too, so whether that is the problem and she is egg bound and has prolapsed because of straining. Will see if she has laid when I get home from work.
 
The problem is they can so easily get infected...we had to "sort out" one of our chooks yesterday because she had had a prolapse which got infected

Hopefully vet can sort for you and she will be ok.

Please may I hi-jack your thread a little whilst the 'chicken people' are around? What do you all recommend for a hen that is crop bound? Tried massaging it Sat night and yesterday - she still seems a bit uncomfortable today. Do you think olive oil will work?
 
Flush it! I got my vet to show me how to tube them and it is just a case of getting fluid into it to try and move whatever is causing the blockage. Unfortunately I lost my last one because although she saw 2 different vets and was treated and tubed several times a day they didn't realise how bad the blockage was. I had her booked in for surgery because I could feel it some of the time but not all, she died the morning the surgery was booked. I opened the crop after she had died and it was full of woodshavings, she had basically starved to death because she wouldn't eat, the bit of wheat she had eaten was still in the crop along with the maggots that I had tried to see if they would clear it. In future I would tube baby food down to ensure something was going into the system until they were better.
