Oh my God! I totally agree with you. I thought it was just because mine's a nutter but he does 0-80mph in about 3 seconds flat!! It quite shocked me the first time! Glad I am no longer alone!!!
I think Georgie must be the one that broke the mould! He doesnt do fast - ever - at all - never. Even in company and they are disappearing over the horizon he just cant be bothered!
Goddy can be when he wants....which isnt very often!! But he has made the time at ODE's when other have had lots of time penalties, and also had lots of time penalties when others havent!! Depends on his mood!!
I have two ID X's one is ID X TB (7yrs) and the other ISH X AA (2.5yrs). The 7 year old is a very forward going ride and fast but very safe. My youngster is very sharp but lovely natured! I love the ID X's and would go for them every time. IMO they are forward going enough to be enjoyable but safe at the same time and generally very good allrounders.
I only discovered Tylers fast streak while out on a hack. ONe of the horses got in front of him and he wasnt a happy bunny. Turned into something that resembled the Grand National!!!! Had a good laugh about it, but now keep an eye how how Tyler is feeling, never know when he might take it upon himself to break land speed records.
Despite that he is absolutely perfect. Never rears or bucks, does everything you ask of him. Safe jumper and superb hunter.
Maiden is another of the (rarer) slower Irish ones. She's supposedly ID X TB (I don't personally believe she has a drop of TB in her and my vet is convinced she's got some Lipizzaner in there!) and she has trouble getting one foot off the ground at a time in walk let alone all four in canter/ gallop! She galloped about the other week when the new girl arrived and Maiden and Darcy felt the need to chase poor Libby round their eight acre field, but M's normal turn of speed is about two paces of a slow trot then back to halt (exhausted from all the effort)! I used to take her up to the local field everyone canters round and tried to get her going, but no luck.
Then again I love her just the way she is
My boss has a new Irish fella, I've not seen him move yet but I trotted him up the other day for the chiro and my GOD he has a huge, fast trot! I couldn't keep up! Lord knows what he's like in faster gaits! Lovely boy though.
Mine is a little lazy, but if you ask him to go then by god will he go!! His gallop is really fast but hes easy to pull up. I think its due to his long legs though, he really stretches them out when galloping.
mine is also a miscellaneous out of ireland. i suspect IDx and his passport says irish sob (but he's 16.2 and looks almost pure ID) he isn't so much fast (tho he is quick) as incredibly powerful.... its like driving a sports car without the 150mph top speed, top speed feels like about 90mph, if you get my meaning...
he's all acceleration and nowhere to go.
put him in a trot and you could go for weeks at a trot faster and longer than most horses can do, almost the same as my sisters welsh x hann can canter!
IMO he's one of the best in the world, he'll try anything for me, and went from field masters horse who wouldn't jump, to RC horse trials championships in 3 years! yes 3 years is a long time, but we still have fun! and it took me a year to get him to jump consistently.
My IDXTB is so quick. The first time i let her go, i got such a shock, just this massive surge of power, felt amazing!! She is quite big moving considering she is a little chunky!
I have yet to xc her etc but i do work her very hard and i am yet to tire her out, which is a pain as she is quite highly strung and would love it if she felt just a little tired once in a while!! She never hunted before i got her and i haven't either as to be honest i think it would all be a little much for her, however she needs to go hunting but i won't and even my instructor who will normally ride anything and adores my horse won't even take her!! I think i need to find somebody with a death wish to take her!!
However i adore my horse, even with her quirks and i wouldn't change her for the world!!
We don't know Murphs breeding but he came over from Ireland as a 4 year old and would say definitely some ID. He is quite chunky, not the fastest over the ground but great in jump offs cos turns really well. He is a bit of a nutter out hunting, was used for field master for several seasons so believes he should always be in front!
rode out with socksnblaze recently and warned her of the "canter" we were about to do as it wouldnt be normal speed and she was in hysterics about how fast my boy goes, like a rocket, "considering he is a chunky monkey". he moves when he wants to! and sometimes when i dont want him to haha.
My chunky IDx mare is a lot faster than mum's TB, she has a lovely ground covering stride and is really powerful. I dont take her out SJ anymore, but when I did, she would win JO's by a country mile!
Missy has got speed for definite , I noticed as soon as she came charging at me in the field when I called her lol .
My last mare was by an ID stallion called O' Malley , and out of a TB mare called wild civil .... She was very quick, very forward going to ride but would take care of her rider with a fantastic jump would easily jump 1.30 , she was honest and very smart , loved her to pieces .
My Irish mare is not particularly fast (my previous horse was an arab x and would have left current girl standing!) but she is strong and has staying power. She can't really be bothered galloping around in the field either -prefers to conserve her energy for eating.
pig is ish.
she is pretty fast she used to go neck and neck with my friends ex racer on the beach lol.
maniac jumping though-very over sensitive and would stop dead on landing and rodeo if you accidently put your leg on her sides too hard!lol.
I've got an ID & he's a darn sight faster than he looks, not much gets away from him. He's also a real speed freak & shows his excitement by bucking - not good. He seems to go for ever once he gets in a rhythm. He's sharp & can be opinionated to ride but will also try his heart out to please.
He's a lovely person if you stay on the right side of him but has a real temper if crossed - I've known him get away from & nearly flatten very good men but also seen him caught & lead by little kids like a total gent. My farrier calls him "special" .....
