As the GTC has now been disbanded, should I stop my Direct Debit registration fee to them?! I have paid them £36.50 (or so) for the last 4 years for absolutely nothing and now they don't exist anymore I'm thinking they shouldn't get another penny!!!

i'm not a member personally (work in sixth form so never had to join) but i would cancel your DD- they will write to you if there is a problem which is unlikely as being disbanded :)

Didnt know the GTC had gone tbh.But not surprised. I would cancel for now and contact your union rep.

Don't know really, but it just seems like quite a lot of money (my husband and I are both teachers) just to be on the register.

Riding club membership is a similar sum each year, but at least you get newsletters, rallies, support, social life etc.

I know it's different but . . . !

from what i can gather all they seem to do is discipline teachers and kick them off the register. its not like your union who actually look after you

Just the same as the GSCC, which I think will also be going the same way:) Never seen the point of either body, what with CRB checks and referances, registration just seems another pointless waste of money (and we don't get our registration paid for us either!)

The GTC is responsible for maintaining teaching standards, amongst other things. There are fellow teachers giving up their free time to work with the GTC to ensure that realistic standards are set and also met.

£36.50 annually is not a lot of money. 70p a week to help improve standards of education seems more than fair!

There are plenty of other bodies maintaining teaching standards, to name but a few; OFSTED, LAs, Governors (as employers). As far as I can see the GTC has done very little to restrain any of the wilder fantasies of whoever happens to have the latest mad idea about what/how we should be teaching. As many of the councillors are from teaching unions, they are simply duplicating input and TBH the unions are better (and more forceful) at representing teachers views. As for disciplinary functions, these can equally well be carried out by the employers, with union representation. Any-one who has broken the law, will suffer the consequences without the GTC needing to get involved.
