Rode Katie today and after getting some good work in walk I thought we would progress to trot (I know I know, I'm on a go slow but I'm not experienced I don't want to rush things!). Anyway, she has the most bizarre trot I have ever ridden, her back end really rocks from side to side, I feel like I'n on a wobbly boat!! I can really feel each of her hips dropping but she went well, could this be engagement, i.e. she's really using her back end? I've only ever ridden riding school horses that have very little motivation so this is a big step up for me and everything feels compltley different! I am going to get videoed tomorrow so I can see what she looks likebut she just feels so strange! Can't wait to get some good lessons, only one strangles swab to go!!

hehe.. welcome to sideways trot.. Trot feals like to rise on a sideways moevemnt as appose to a forward stroke.. Very common in cobs.. LOL
I won't know if shes using herself with out seeing some images/films.

Do you mean traditional cob or Welsh cob?
It sound like a traditional cob thing- definitely not a Welsh cob thing

I've ridden a cob that went like that but it was down to it's confirmation and stiffness rather than being a normal trait

I think a video would definitely help

Cob as in a MW shire cross with something, think she was gypsy horse at some point... sideways trot is a really good description, took me ages to get into the balance and rythym of it!! Aaaghh, need an instructor!!

Cairo (clydesdale) can be a little like that when he is stiff - but he soon goes into a normal trot.

Jemima the GC mare I had, had a beautiful trot once schooled - used to often get 8s in our dressage.

I have only done a few short trots on Chancer and he does not rock.

If she is ex gypsy she may have had a fair few foals from a young age and every year. She may require some physio/back work - Jemima certainly did when I took her on and it made a huge difference to her way of going.

Does it feel like she is rolling from side to side? Is she over weight?
I've only had one cob roll from side to side in trot and that was because he was fat.

That is it - fat (or cob with a problem) rolls like a sailor on a deck.

Once more fit, schooled etc they should not feel different from most other horses. However, they do have powerful backsides and can have a tendancy to be on the forehand if you let them.

What they won't feel like is a long legged TB/warmblood - they generally have short stumpy legs - just like me

I am so glad it is not just me, I bought an Irish cob last week and thought I was going mad when I test rode him, I was persuaded this was normal. I bit the bullet and he was delivered on Friday, I went from thinking it was a rubbish saddle to rubbish riding but having hacked last night for an hour and "gone with the flow" it is getting easier so persvere! Can someone help me? He has cut himself 3x on his legs, 2x on one leg, 1 on another, and I think it is him scratching himself, any tips? Its a real worry so early on. THANKYOU.

Does he have feather? If he is scratching his legs you may have mites - if you want the long saga of how to deal with hairies, pm me and I'll send you a reply I have just sent to someone wanting to know about the dark art of pig oil and sulphur.

yes he has feathers, its the top of his legs he is scratching, above his knees, do you think it could still be mites? all advice gratefully received please as im smitten and worried. how do i pm? new member only as of 10mins ago!

All mine are cobs, you definitely get used to the trots, infact its now strange for me when i get on a finer horse lol

I, too, would be really interested to see this trot. I have a mare that I am still finding odd to ride (after years of pingy arabs, talk about going to extremes) except that she isn't a cob. She's an APHA, Quarter Horse if you like, with a back end like a tank. When she trots it is in slow motion (because Robin doesn't do anything fast) all from the back end with a moment of definite suspension. If I can get her to trot in this heat (30C now) I'll take a video.
