We had the (dubious) pleasure of NELS company on Saturday. Now, they were very professional on the whole and I was impressed by their fitness, as they traipsed over the 100 acre ploughed field I metaphorically took my hat off to them.
BUT I hear a rumour that Lawrence is under the care of psychiatrists (spell)...is this true or just a rumour?

Yes they did there, as we were on the grass track that ruins along the bottom of the field.
They didn't always, ran all over fields.

Take that however you wish.

A mans mental health is his own business!

Just for record, it's not true, but it is very funny :D

You Nels lot have little respect for the hunts privacy so I have little respect for your privacy. Spending his Saturdays with NELS clearly proves he has mental issues :)

I think sabs think they are helping the welfare of the fox.

Hunting with hounds has a minimal negative effect on fox populations. Hence why it is such a rubbish method of control.

And how does running around a field spraying citrus spray everywhere and picking fights with the terriermen and foot followers..and even children count as helping the the welfare of the fox?

That Bendy Endy is your opinion and your opinion only.

So you are content for me to shoot them without discrimination. Before the ban I would not haver shot a fox. Since last year I have shot over 30. The one that I shot this morning was a fit and healthy beast that would have had a very good chance to escape hounds.

A fine friend to the fox population you are.

Hunting with hounds has a beneficial effect on the fox population, that's why it is such a good means of control.

Exactly, why do sabs want us to detonate the population, its not about making them extinct or drastically lowering numbers its about controlling them. Its when they are not controlled that foxes start to take livestock/poultry, if controlled there is enough food for them in the wild without taking Farmer Giles's chickens, geese, ducks, lambs or what have you.

Look at the stats. How many foxes does HWH kill ever year compared to other methods?

..and I've posted enough links for you in the past that say as much so u can do yer own homework this time!!

Didnt you just say that the reason the fox population may decline is because you and neighbouring farmers all go out shooting seperatley (sp) and dont discuss what you've shot?

Well, shooting 30 foxes on yer own seems pretty obvious that your shooting way more than you need to. You are contradicting yourself.

Can you not read??? What have stats got to do with it? Do you think road kills help target a particular problem fox that is taking lambs as soon as they are born? We have said it until we are blue in the face..maybe capitals will help 'WE DON'T WANT TO MAKE THE FOX POPULATION EXTINCT, JUST CONTROL IT'

Who says that I am killing more than I need to? All the foxes shot have been shot on my land. I don't want them there. They eat my gamebirds. If they come on my land, they will die.

Simple as that.

temper temper!! haha

just for you.....

HOW CAN HUNTING WITH HOUNDS CONTROL FOX POPULATIONS IF:

1. FOXES HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING AWAY.
2. THEY ONLY CATCH APPROX 35-ISH FOXES PER SEASON.

Now I may ask how you can be sure that you are chasing the right problem fox and you may well answer that you know the covert where that fox lives and then I may ask why, when you know which covert said fox resides in, you dont shoot it rather than chase it all over the place and give it a good chance of escape. Doesnt make much sense that does it??

And stats have everything to do with it. We know that people can shoot many more foxes than they can kill with hounds therefore most people would say that's a better means of pest control provided the people with the guns aren't trigger happy idiots.

Oh so then you'd be shooting 30 whether hunting with hounds were permitted or not because a hunt couldnt possibly catch 30.

But of course u probably want foxes there so you can have your fun with hounds, no fox hunting, no point, right??

Great attitude!

Because it doesn't control the population by limiting it's numbers, it controls it by weeding out sick and injured foxes and thus making the population and the wildlife at large healthier.

People may think hunting limits fox numbers but as you well know it doesn;t. It can however help get rid of weak and therefore more troublesome animals.

because hunting involves a competitive chase it naturally targets weaker specemins who are less likely to be able to escape the hounds. It also produces far less, arguably no wounded animals in comparision to 'efficient' shooting. Wounded animals linger, suffer and spread disease.

Bendy,

It is clear that all your loose opinions are based on theory and not reality.

The fact of the matter is that many more foxes, deer and hare are being killed (and injured) through shooting and snaring than they were before the ban.

Hunts are still killing a fair few as well.

You and your mates are a real friend to the wildlife of this country aren't you?

Seriously Endy...I wasn't shouting, just figured with all of this reading your eyes were strained...atleast thats what I thought your excuse was for not understanding the word CONTROL :smirk:

"And stats have everything to do with it. We know that people can shoot many more foxes than they can kill with hounds therefore most people would say that's a better means of pest control provided"

But you're still obsessed with the quantity of what we kill....*sigh*

"Now I may ask how you can be sure that you are chasing the right problem fox and you may well answer that you know the covert where that fox lives and then I may ask why, when you know which covert said fox resides in, you dont shoot it rather than chase it all over the place and give it a good chance of escape. Doesnt make much sense that does it??"

Because shooting it can lead to injuring, with hounds they are dead or alive...simple as black and white with no grey areas whatsoever. I guess we could have just snared them...not such a pretty way to go if they aren't the obliging type.

As for the 'chasing it all over the place', if it is a strong and healthy enough fox to outrun/outfox a pack of hounds then perhaps it isn't the problem fox that we were looking for. Weaker/older/ill foxes will look for easy pickings, so its unlikely that a fox that could outrun hounds (depending on the country and terrain) is going to be the one coming up to the farmhouse to kill some chickens.

Hercules, your statement that you now shoot 30 foxes because you cant hunt with hounds really shows your true colours. You come across as spiteful and petulant.

As it happans I live near a gamekeeper who abhors hunting with hounds. he manages a small estate and keeps close tabs on all the coverts in his area. As this area is used for shooting game he does cull the foxes, he claims to know them all v well and says he takes about 3/4 of the eldest per mth depending on the season. He shoots them. As you probably know I dont like shooting either but he has always been a good example of how hunting with hounds is unnessesary even in a farming/shooting area.

It's not black and white. foxes can die thru trauma, stress and exhaustion after a chase.

All animals, ill or healthy will take the easiest meal available to them. It's a basic law of nature, called Foraging Theory.
