How often do you go to see your horse? Obviously some of it will depend how far away it is....

Mine has been out on loan (second time around!) for a couple of months or so and I've only been up once. Not sure if this is too little! I get regular text and email updates from the loaners, I'm happy he's being looked after really well as he looked great and so chilled when I did go to see him about 4 weeks ago. I don't feel that I need to be checking up on them or him all the time but just wondering how often you all see your loaned horses?

Just out of interest, did you get a loan agreement done by a solicitor? We are thinking of full loaning two of ours but have heared so many horror stories!!

Well... I amended the BHS one. Puppy had a look over it and so did a friend of mine who's a solicitor and just gave me a few pointers. The first lot of loaners were a nightmare but the current lot are absolutely brilliant and I couldn't ask for any better. They email me at least once a week, usually more, and text. Fingers crossed they are going to buy him next year - we've talked about that and about changing the contract after the first year to be permenant loan.

I made a bad judgement call with the first people but I also believe they lied to me about their experience and circumstances. He is now with a family who came to look at him first time around and I really should have followed my gut instinct and sent him to them in the first place.

So far, loaning has worked out really well with the second lot. I also have my mare on loan from a friend of a friend and it works really well too.

Glad to hear you have finally found a good home for the boy. Whilst they are keeping up such constant contact - I wouldn't worry too much, when the contact starts to dissipate, then I would go and visit him for a quick check up.

mine is out on loan at the moment, I try to go up every couple of months to visit. I was terrified of being the obsessed owner constantly turning up and getting in the way actually but I find, like you, that I hear every week or so how she is getting on. I think if I went more regularly I would find it more difficult to leave her out on loan.

Thanks, it's just a relief really! They adore him and he looks so chilled and happy.

Makes me think I should probably be in contact with my girl's owner more, but then again she does have a friend who has her horse on the same yard as me...

I feel better reading that as every couple of months is probably about what I would do.

BTW - is this your first post?! Welcome to the forum!

From the other side, I have two on loan. I chat to the owner of one of them regularly and keep her updated. The other owner I never hear from, I send them a message or call from time to time, but never even heard back when I told them he was competing. I know they trust me to look after him, but sometimes their lack of interest is a little worrying

My girl is on loan whilst im at Uni (4 1/2 hours away) so i pretty much have to be governed by holiday weeks to be able to visit her - which are every couple of months. But that doesn't worry me in the least, as i am in regular contact with the Loaner, and i know she is being looked after and is happy as larry. I couldn't be happier with how it has turned out. And have absolutely no worries with her standard of care or any other aspect of her situation. As long as you are happy, then just go with the flow!

it does, and i feel the same way! It was heart wrenching to leave her, but although i miss her, i know i have nothing to worry about. and i saw her for the first time since i left last week, she looks better than when i left her! So i am not worried about not seeing her for such long periods of time, i just miss her! Im a soppy whatsit! How is Rhyn getting on with them?

Brilliant thanks, couldn't have asked for better people. He's doing loads of hacking, has lost lots of weight which is great, she's been doing pony races and playing gymkhana games with him. Much more his thing than poncy dressage and trying to make him into a SJing pony LOL! The girl who rides him has her first lesson on him on saturday so fingers crossed it goes well. The first lot of people sent him back because apparently he was a "bucking lunatic that no one can even sit on"....current lot emailed yesterday to say he tried it on a bit on sunday, threw a cheeky buck in when he was asked to canter but the loaner just kicked him on out of it and he carried on with his work rather sheepishly!

I guess it's different for you than me as I have something else on loan myself now so I still have a horse. If I didn't have my new girl I don't think I would be quite so easy going about it!

How are you getting on at uni?

I worry the same! I wish I could visit more but visiting has to fit around uni holidays and she lives hours away from both uni and home. But I trust them to look after her; in fact she is more spoilt there than she ever was at home!

My mare is out on loan - i couldnt be happier with the loanee and i will try to see her every couple of months (ish) but i dont want to be 'looking over her shoulder' so try not to fuss or pester.

perversly i would want to see her more if i was worried or feeling a lack of communication - generally a 'alls well' txt keeps me happy!

I have loaned horses myself over the years and know that constantly being pestered is a constant reminder the horse is 'loaned' and not your own. but some contact is lovely.

Aw, he sounds like he has fallen straight onto his feet!! Great to hear they are getting on so well with the little Dude!
TBH im missing her a hell of a lot, but thats just me being selfish, she is in heaven, and is the same happy, crazy, bouncy pony i left 2 months ago. Its amazing how much spare time you have when you take horses out of your life. And i dont like sitting on my bum! lol!
Uni is going very well thanks, hard work and difficult at times, but i am having an absolute ball!
How is the new mare settling in? and how are you adjusting to having a mare after Rhyn? They can be cheeky beggars, but i am a complete mare convert!

Glad you're getting on well and you found her a nice home.

The mare is fab and I am 100% converted to mares (and to WBs!

)! My gelding is lovely but she just has something extra. In the couple of months I've had her my riding has changed so much, have learnt to be so much more quiet. I only have to think something and she does it so I have to be so careful and so much more consistent now. Having lots of fun though

I'm so pleased to hear you've got someone again for your girly!

Must admit this post has made me feel a bit guilty as I don't really contact my girl's owner much, just the odd text, so I have just written her a little email telling her what we've been up to, how the lessons are going etc.

I used to go about every 3 weeks (but he was only about 3 miles up the road!) However I like the yard so much that I have moved my current horse there too so now I see him daily which is lovely

I have a lad out on loan and I don't visit him enough, maybe every month or two. But, the owner is a long-term friend of my hubby, we trust her, my boy is very well and happy when I see him, and we speak by phone sometimes.

I've just had to put my horse out on loan while I finish uni off. I'm not in the least bit worried about her because she's hasn't moved yard. I've worked there for years so I know everyone, and know that if anything was wrong with Chess somebody would phone me immediately. I've only seen her once since she went on loan at the beginning of October.

I've known the girl I've loaned her to for years which helps, and I get lots of texts and picture messages. As with JoJo, she gets more spoilt by her loaner than she ever did with me. I just got a text asking about maybe feeding Chess to help her get through the colder nights, which is quite funny considering how fat and hardy she is!

My mare went out on loan in July and i've seen her every month, i will probably drop it to every 2 mths from now as the lady who loans her is now a really good friend and when i do go and see the horse, i end up going out for lunch with her and having a chat,i really couldn't of got a nicer loan home for her and i'm dreading that day when i get the phone call to say she'll have to come back, not because i don't won't her but because i have a youngster now and i wouldn't be able to give the love and time to 2 horses.I definatley rate Horsemart for loaning,i got about 30 E-mails and at least 15 phone calls, she was a very good pony to have on loan as she had very good things going for her so maybe i was offering a good package! I might just of been lucky however.

We have two horses out on loan, we keep in touch with their new mums regularly via e-mail and they send us pics.
We will visit our mare who is at the other end of the country just once a year. Another is only 40 mins away so we will go twice a year.
If i was concerned about anything then i guess i would go more but then if i had concerns i would bring them home.
