Hi there,

I've been offered a low milage Honda CRV. Year 2000 model, 4x4 2.0 litre petrol engine. Before I consider it I need to find out if it would be viable to pull a trailer. My horse is a 16hh Warmblood and Im guessing weighs 600kg at most (although Id need to weigh her to make sure) It will only be used for fairly short journeys to shows etc. no long haul trips. If so, what trailer weight would I be limited to?

many thanks?

If anyone else has any experiences good or bad, I would be grateful to hear them :D

You need to know the exact model as their towing weights vary a lot.

I know someone with a fairly standard one and they say its underpowered with passengers and luggage. Again I guess it depends on the model.

I have a Honda CR-V 2.0 petrol manual and would never risk towing with it. A caravan maybe but not a horse and trailer.
The towing weight for mine is about 1400/1500kg. Towing livestock you should only go to 85% of that so with a large horse and trailer combination you would be over. I love the car although its quite thirsty but imo not 'manly' enough to remain stable on the road with a horse & trailer.

I have a similar model 2002 petrol 2.0l and have towed with it once. It managed fine but I wouldn't do it again as it didn't feel powerful or strong enough to do a proper job. I think weights are also an issue with it as it has a low tow capacity....

I only know of someone who tows a pony and even they are thinking of trading up.

I understand from ROG's previous posts that the 85% figure is a red herring use for newbie caravanners. But looking at What Car or Honest John will ive you the specs for the year in question

Ignore that as the 85% recommendation refers to caravans only

To the OP
I found a 2001 Honda Cr-V 2.0I LS 5DR but as others have said, I need the exact model to get the correct weights

What is the exact model please ?

I also need to know if you will be towing under B or B+E licence rules ?

Thanks ROG :D

Im unsure of ecavt model as seller is away on hols at the mo! i will get it and post it up. Many thanks and of course thanks also to the other posters ;)

I used to have a CRV and the towing on the older models, which I think this one is had a maximum braked weight of 1500kg ( possibly 1600 kg). The newer model, from around 2006?' when the diesel engine was introduced tows 2000kg. Hope that helps but I'm sure ROG will be more precise when exact model details known.

Sorry I must have that wrong  I thought though that on the 'Towinghorsetrailers' website it advised not to tow on the limit and allow a decent margin of 200 (or so) kg.

The spec in my handbook that covers all 2.0 petrol cr-v's of that age is:
Max towing weight for a trailer with brake: Auto transmission 1,200 kgs and Manual transmission 1,500 kgs.
So with your horse and say for instance a Ifor 505 that would put you over the weight. It may be possible with a lighter trailer but I know by driving my Cr-v daily that I would not trust it coping with a horse leaning, snaking trailer or hills.
ROG would be best to advise on the legal side though.

Sort of correct because the engine may, in some circumstances, struggle a little if both towing vehicle and trailer are loaded to the maximum GTW (actual weight)

Im not sure what the difference is between the B and B + E rules. excuse my ignorance Im new to this! :o

I *think* its a B but I will be doing my trailer test if that helps?

You have B at the moment and passing the trailer test will give you B+E

If you are looking to tow one horse then its possible with the right vehicle and trailer to tow on your B

thanks ROG :D

I will try and get a hold of the exact make and model of the CRV in question :D

I have one which I used to tow with. Not good. Going in a straight line on the flat was fine but rubbish uphills, rubbish at reversing with a horse on board and the tow bar seemed quite low to me which made the trailer feel kind of downhill a lot of the time. I now tow with an L200 and the difference is incredible! Don't even notice I'm towing now compared to willing the Honda to get up a hill. Oh and hill starts were IMPOSSIBLE!

ok here goes...

Its a
year 2000
2.0 ES Executive.........anxiously awaits :o:o

THIS ONE ?
Kerb = unknown but guessing between 1400 to 1500
GVW 1930
Towing 1500

If that is the right model and lets say the kerbweight is 1400 then the max plated trailer MAM for B licence towing would be 1400 kgs
Using a lightweight trailer which is 800 kgs empty/unladen then the max horse/load for the trailer will be 600 kgs

I really need the unladen or kerbweight for the CRV ranges but cannot find it
Does the V5 registered keepers form have a MASS IN SERVICE kgs amount on it between 1400 and 1500 kgs ??

On a B+E licence simply go by the 1500 kgs max for the trailer when loaded
