Quick one.....

A good friend has asked me to move one of her ponies for her this weekend to a potential loan home. Happy to do it as she doesn't have transport anymore and going through a rough time. She offered to cover costs. I've said to her that I would do it for nothing as I 'think' it will invalidate my insurance/is illegal under DVLA rules  if I take a reward for doing it. But is covering costs of fuel ok, or can I not even be reimbursed for that?

Thanks. :)

Here is a direct quote from the VOSA (dept for transport guide for horsebox owners)
"Where transport is in connection with an amateur activity and for nothing more than fuel money (purely to cover costs), then an operator’s licence will not be required" ie they do not regard sharing fuel costs as commercial. Amateur means not as your business and only for 'nominal' prize money.

In terms of insurance, if invalidation was on the basis of 'reward' then you are fine based on the above, and it would only be if the insurance company had dreamt up something specific to that company they put in your policy saying you can only travel your own horses or something bizarre that would raise any question. So I would check your policy doc, and then ring if unsure. (do read doc first to ensure that your "telephone rep talking rubbish" filter can be switched on if you call....:-)))

NB I would still want to make sure any horse belonging to another that I was carrying was appropriately insured at least for 3rd party liabilities, as well as mine.

^^^^ that is the right answer :D

Commercial means making or intending to make profit
