Question for those who borrow transport...

My opinion (catty though it is) is that if you can't afford to purchase a trailer then you can't afford to fix one. Therefore I've always opted to not lend mine to anyone unless they have their own transport (and it's off the road) or if they're in a dire situation as I can imagine sods law would occur and I'd be left without a trailer......
Given what you've said, I'd agree with others that she should be able to afford her own (I'm assuming she's already got a tow car otherwise what is she pulling it with?)
When I first came to my current yard I had several people ask to borrow the trailer or ask if my husband would "just mind" taking their horse somewhere, or I'd have people suggesting shows and events that were "right up my street" so in the end I'd said no so many times people don't bother asking anymore........
So yes have a word and air your opinions to her, she may not have even realised she was inconveniencing you. But in your situation I personally would put a stop to the borrowing :)

I'll quite happily take people if I am already going to a show (horse size permitting for payload) and have a grand total of 2 friends I would let borrow it if they need to. They have their own box (a share) and when it was out of action for a new ramp, they could borrow mine. When mine was out of action (ironically for a new ramp) I used theirs when free. Each pay for diesel and add a tenner or so (depending on journey) for wear and tear. If I am taking someone to somewhere I am already going, I expect nothing, but the 2 people I have taken will insist on something

I bought my box so I could go out when and where I want with my horse so if I was in your shoes I would definitely get the conversation over with ASAP :)

Hope we all haven't scared you off OP and that your pink elephants are happily living in your trailer now with no worry of being evicted.

Not at all! The inhabitants of the trailer are most pleased! Haven’t braved the conversation yet as have had a crazy week at work and thankfully no more borrowing requests this week 🤞 also using trailer for myself this weekend so I think I get a reprieve until next week at least!

I think you need a new wheel clamp for your trailer (that only you have a key to!).
I bought my own lorry in 2005 after working 2 jobs to scrimp to get it converted - I deliberately didn't have a partition made so no one could ask for a lift (my cob could only travel without one anyway plus I'd never have had the payload)
My OH and I agreed, no lending, hiring, giving anyone lifts unless life or death. In 2013 I sadly had to give someone a lift to Horsepital for colic surgery - they actually had their own 7.5 ton but horse was too ill to get up the ramp so I offered my 3.5 ton and drove them myself. I didn't take any money though they offered, it was bad enough coming back with an empty lorry :(
I had people asking how much to give them a lift, after moaning how much it was to hire a 3.5 ton.....hints dropped...I stayed firm & after seeing the mess people's transport comes back in after lending, I never will. Again, I'd be the first in a life or death situation but I sweated blood for that lorry and looked after it - in fact I sold it for more than I bought it for after 11 years as it was pristine - because I kept it that way!
OP, I hope your "friend" is suitably ashamed of themselves when you put them right - and don't be surprised if they go out and buy themselves a trailer when you say no more....

We only have an elderly tatty Rice trailer (do have small lorry as well admittedly which hubby drives), but I love it because it means I can get out for lessons on my own or with son and his pony during the week.

I'd be gutted if anything happened to it, and really resent the fact that hubby lends it to a neighbour occasionally. Last time he jammed the split pin holding the doors over the rear ramp in so tightly I couldn't get it out again, and I had an absolute fit, so I totally get where you're coming from OP...

I really wish you the best of luck in your 'conversation' with your livery..... and hope you can enjoy your transport a lot more in the future.

Fiona

Just wondering if OP has had the talk yet?!

I’ve thankfully had a couple of weeks of no requests, which has been heaven after the crazy borrowing all summer and so I’ve been pottering about to lessons and dressage in my own trailer - bliss! Going to tackle the issue when the inevitable starts again, but feeling much calmer about it and very backed up by all the lovely people on this thread!
