Question for those with demolition / escapee habits!!!

Our *delightful* Section B filly is way too fat and to be frank if she doesn't stop eating will get lami in the v. near future.

Now, to resolve this, we have been bringing said pony in at night and she's been getting a little bit of last years hay when she's in but nothing else.

My problem is that when she's out, she has NO respect for fences!! We have to put electric fencing up for her paddocks and she either limbos through them (regardless of the zap she gets on the way

) or just jumps them!

I have tried double fencing - apparently that's just a challenge and again she just limbos her way through

Am slightly near my wits end with this and I can't keep her in all the time!!

Any suggestions?? (Obviously tying her legs together isn't really an option - even though it's v. tempting

Post and rail? might be a bit expensive but it would be more substantial, she might not be able to get through?
Or triple fencing. ..if you have enough tape :S

My boy is free range i swear. He just jumps out of his fields and wonders to the muck heap for some reason?!?!
Electric fence makes no difference, but he is getting better.

do you put lots of lenghts at different heights on the electric fencing posts so that there are no gaps to limbo under? i find this deters my little pony because she can't just run through/under one line.
 
If you are running your fence off a battery, are you sure its always fully charged and delivering a powerful enough zap?

My lot were always very good at knowing when the power was a bit low and would take advantage - I now run the fencing off the mains and they are VERY respectful of it!

I also had to use metal posts as one of mine would grab the top of the plastic posts, pull them out of the ground, drop them, then step over the fencing!

Hope you can find a solution, it is so frustrating when they keep on escaping!
 
Have you tried muzzling the little darling?
Perhaps she may be happier in a bigger field with company, but with a muzzle on to stop her scoffing.
 
mintakamint that's my next job - am going to get the little *angel* a muzzle this afternoon.

sprout - yes, I have 2 huge truck batteries that are always fully charged - you can absolutely hear the crack going through the tape!

Tallyhoho - we have 3 strands of tape - it's all electrified as it has connectors to them all.

Tis very frustrating......

....... and I just know I'm going to get moaned at from my grumpy farrier next week cos he HATEs seeing fat ponies......
 
I have been today and purchased a shires muzzle

- pony is still standing in the huff but have fed her some grass through the bottom of it so she knows she can eat! She will either figure it out soon enough or one of the youngsters will pull it off and then I'll be back to square one

stock fencing with electric tape running along the inside has been the only thing to stop our little houdini escaping! he has gone through barb wire,up and over stone walls, through blackthorn hedges and never gets a scratch on him, we resorted to tethering him until we moved and took over some paddocks with stock fencing

some folks might have a fit at the dangers of caught feet etc etc but they've probably not had to retrieve their pony from the neighbours on a daily basis or walked 100 acres looking for him when he joined the herd of cows
