A girl at our yard had a 15.2hh TB type mare, about 15 years old. She bought it for £1200 last year but struggled to ride it - never had a lesson on it as far as I know, and it's not that bad, but I wouldnt know as she never let anyone else get on it.

She then got one of the other horses on our yard on loan, so decided to sell this one. Put it on Horsemart or somewhere for about 2 weeks and cos she didnt get any phonecalls (at £1200) she decided to bring in a dealer to look at it.

Dealer came today, looked at it, didn't ride it, gave her £500 for it and took it away in travel boots and a tail bandage but did NOT take the saddle or bridle or rugs (all decent) even though he could have.

Has this horse gone for meat? She doesn't think so but Ive got a bad feeling.....

wouldnt know how much the meatman would pay tho?

dealers just take them away and sell them on double the price they pay for them wouldnt of thought they pay that much if it was going for meat

She's lucky the dealer took it away wearing bandages and a tail bandage! Probably is just a dealer, most dodgy ones don't ride them and buy for a minimal amount knowing that they can sell them on for at least double what they paid, even if it means lying

I don't think it's gone for meat, and I wouldn't worry.
The dealer will have some young lads that will be able to get a tune out of it so that he can sell it on again for a fat profit.
That's what dealers do.
The horse may well end up getting a decent home, not all dealers are bad.

Why do you dislike dealer so much? I have quite a few friends who regularly buy from dealers and they all give their horse's lovely homes. Most dealers are willing to take a horse back if it's not suitable which gives you peace of mind that they're not going to try and sell you some lunatic horse if you're a novice rider. They don't want it coming back to them or having their reputation tarnished.

I agree ,dealers get a bad name ,even more so since the JG horror story. My friend is a dealer and the majority of times the horses she gets are one the owners can't cope with, and they are not put up for sale until they have been worked with and she knows what antics they are likely to perform so she can inform the potential buyers ,one horse stayed six months to get him the right home. There are good and bad out there ,but unfortunately its the bad that get noticed.

I agree too.... many/most dealers are experienced horsemen/women and are just what a horse needs to re-draw boundaries and get them working correctly again - dealers need the horse to stay in their yard as short a time as possible, before finding a suitable home and since dealers live by their reputations, they will often provide warranties and take back anything that is not suitable.

I have seen high class dealers and those at the bottom end (many years ago I rode for one at the tail end, but she was very very good and highly thought of, despite being a bit "pikey!!"), so don't worry - just watch and see if that same horse comes out at your local show and wins everything!

No- it has gone to be schooled and sold on for more money which is what dealers do.

Most dealers wouldnt buy tack- they have plenty enough of their own

Good heavens.

For £500 I would have taken her on and given her a home for life. I am a sucker for a hard luck story.

You see, this is the thing.... she was lovely so why not sell her to a home for life for £500 rather than a dealer? I would want to know exactly where she was, which I do with the two Ive sold.

I don't think I could ever sell a horse without knowing exactly where he/she was going and that they would be well looked after. But then perhaps I am just soft?

Not Soft Magic, caring

I agree, you're not soft, just a caring horse owner. Id be happy if my horse never goes out of my sight again and I will never ever sell him, Id rather be homeless than lose him.

I know I have got my horse-of-a-lifetime but surely a horse that isnt quite a horse of a lifetime to me could be for someone else? So wherever it goes is very important. Im gutted shes gone and she wasnt even mine. And she used to bite my horses bum when he walked past!
