Hello,
A few days ago my mare had her first filly who is a black leopard spot (3 weeks early but every1s fine phew) At the moment she has black legs and a black mane and tail. Her body is white but covered in black spots.
Does any1 know if the legs and mane and tail will change as she grows up?
This is my first foal so I have not had experience of this b4 and looking on the internet i cant even find a pic of a black leopard with black legs/mane&tail!!!
Any help would be amazing, thanks

lucky you, getting a spotty!
i don't know about spotties, but with the solid-coloured horses i've bred, they have had quite dramatic changes from foal colour to adult colour... from very bright bay to very dark bay, for example. i don't think what you see is what you're necessarily going to get! the foal-fluff coat can be very misleading. i've had manes and tails change colour too, from flaxen to dark chestnut, for example.

Manes and tails DON'T always stay the same in Highlands, but haven't a clue about spotted, it depends on the dominant gene, eg grey, in Highlands. For instance, two of mine were born mouse dun, with black legs, black mane and tails, and have and will go grey.

Here's last years foal, that will eventually go grey all over

and her's her mum, who used to be the same colour

hmmmm spotty genes are on their own really as they are very difficult to predict...........but I own a gelding who as a 3 year old was dapple grey with black points and a black mane and tail but he is now completely white although he is 17 so there is a possibility that yours may go lighter too...we also had a leopard spot for our children that had chestnut legs neck and face in the winter as a 3 year old and in the summer went more spotty and when we sold him last year he was loud leopard all over! you may find your filly will continue to spot out as she grows good luck and please post some piccies as its very interesting to me, I have recently purchased a black filly out of a black mare and a spotty stallion and am wondering what colour she will be as her full brother was the same colour as her when he was born but spotted out over the winter.

My grey Irish draught has gone to the same stallion too, so if she is in foal it will be interesting to see what she throws next year......sorry its a long answer!

Your filly sounds gorgeous!!! We had a colt born jet black with a perfect blaze and although the blaze remained the rest of him turned a gorgeous shade of iron grey and when we sold him he had dapples. I think it really is quite random

I know I've posted these before, this is 3/4 Welsh D and 1/4 appaloosa, pics over the first 11 months of her life. You will probably get more help too if you post in Breeding?

I hope you have much fun with her. Just as a by the by, I thought that the BAps discouraged breeding Appy's with Greys as they cause fading if their progeny breed?
