I posted a question about which riding hat to go for a couple of weeks ago and have now decided on a Charles Owen Kylo. Upon measuring my head it turns out I would ‘fit’ either the small or medium. I have tried a friend’s Kylo in medium on and it easily goes tight enough for my head (even adjusting it as tight as it would go on my head, once I removed it it would tighten further) so I’m thinking that a medium is what I’d go for.

My question is, as it’s an adjustable helmet does that mean I’d be okay to go ahead and order one online or should I really still be getting it fitted by someone trained to do so? Strangely, nobody near me sells it so I’d have to travel quite a distance if I wanted it fitted. I’m going to pay extra for one with MIPS if that makes any difference to the question.

I’ve been told that the Kylo is already not manufactured in the UK so I’m hopeful that the recent news about Charles Owen won’t be an issue in getting hold of one!

Hi there I have a 55cm head and have both the Kylo and the Luna. I bought the medium shell Luna and use it for everyday and jumping. The Kylo is no where near as strong and quality as the Luna, but I just use it for dressage competitions- it’s the MIPS as I had a bad head injury 7 years ago. I bought the Kylo in small to save the vat, but should have gone for the medium - hope that helps

My head measures 55/56cm so like you I’m right on the border between sizes. I may have to re-think if the Luna is a lot stronger - I don’t do anything like eventing but I may as well have the safest hat if I’m buying a new one! Thanks.

Definitely go for the medium shell - the Kylo is very lightweight and a bit flimsy it was about 1/3 of the price so you get what you pay for. It is sparkly and goes with my dressage outfit, but hands down the Luna is the better made hat and that’s what I would jump in.

I paid for MIPs upgrade on both. I got the navy and rose gold Luna, and the black shiny sparkly rose gold Kylo. The fittings at the back of the Kylo are all plastic and no where near and solid as the Luna

I tried on a few different dial fit hats for the first time the other day. I definitely felt the input of the fitter was important. One fit me but I didn't like the style of it. The ones I did like the style of could have given the impression they fit me but felt like they were almost perched on top of my head. Without the fitters input I wouldn't have known if that's just how those hat are or if my sense was right that it wasn't a good fit.

I just think it's too important to have a hat that fits correctly, so although finding one in my size is going to be tricky, I can't bring myself to not get it fitted.
