Right had to buy my mare a new rain sheet as her wb sheet that is 4 years old is leaking.......how do i dry it out and reproof it?

Also with all this wet weather the rugs are really getting a drowning.......by the morning im putting wet and chilly rugs back on so im thinking of just leaving the wet rugs on the horses to dry as they are toasty under them anyway and i think i remember a few HHOers say they do the same. Does it work?

Thank you, tea and chocolate biscuits for answering :D

Yep the best way to dry a rug is to leave on the horse:)

With the rug that is leaking its notsurprising really with the amount of rain we are having - does it have any fill in it at all? if not it really is more shower proof. Either way you need to get it clean and dry before reproofing.:)

even though its pretty warm and mine are hardy they are all in medium weights as they are less likely to get soaked through! they had lights on the other night and was soaked and shivering in the morning, so going to stick with mediums for now! they had a few hrs naked yesterday when the rain stopped and they really enjoyed that!

Yep in the past when we have had rain and the pony was stabled over night I used to leave his turn out on to dry. As long as they are dry underneath it their body heat will dry it out quicker than if you take it off.

Three are in rain sheets as they are getting abit too toasty in meduims.....the rug that leaked is a lite. Has a bit of fill in it....just got her a amigo rain sheet.

Why are the lites and sheets not as waterproof as the heaver weight rugs?

Good question..I just know that the medium weights keep them reasonably dry, I presume the material is better quality. Lightweights seem more showerproof.

Unless your rugs leak . . . I'd leave them on . . . The body heat from the horse will dry them out and much better than putting a cold damp rug on the next day :)

Some lightweights are useless in this type of weather, they leak as theyre not that waterproof and the weight when wet holds the damp cold rug next to the horses body as theres no fill, making them cold

I am interested to know if people would leave a dripping wet rug on overnight? If so doesn't soak the bedding? I only ask as I have a horse on straw bedding that loves to lay down.

I am so pleased with this weather than my friend and I recently invested in a rug dryer to share. It is magical in this weather!

I have to say I don't leave wet rugs on, but I don't put them back on wet either. I turn out every day, I just had a lot of rugs before the rug dryer and had wet rugs hanging everywhere! The rug dryer has revolutionised my life! It's not expensive to run, abour 50p per hour to dry 4 rugs.

Amigo rainsheet. Keeps wind off keeps him dry and only takes an hour on him in the stable to dry. I wouldn't put my rugs up unless the temperature dropped severely

Def second the use of waterproofing from camping shop - have been doing that for some years with my turnouts and they all seem fine. Also try to avoid washing them too often as this seems to break down the built-in proofing in the fibres.
