Depends entirely on the stallion owner. I was considering using frozen from a stallion who is now in his dotage and not available any other way - but they wanted a considerable sum for two straws with NO guarantee. I asked if I could use the 2nd straw on another mare if I didn't need both - the answer was no, I'd have to return it.

I thought that was greedy. I wouldn't have minded paying a little extra if I got two mares in foal - but the gamble was ALL mine. I could have ended up with NO mares in foal, all the associated costs, and nothing back. Needless to say, I'm looking elsewhere.

Normally, a stud fee is paid to get one mare in foal, whether you are using fresh, chilled semen (same as if the mare were being covered naturally). You are not paying for a batch of semen, as such, you are paying for a breeding for that mare to that stallion.

Sometimes a stallion owner will allow you to use 'spare' frozen semen on a second mare, but this is effectively a '2 breedings for the price of 1' deal, and should certainly not be expected as a matter of course - any more than you would expect a stallion to cover a second mare naturally without paying a second stud fee.

Personally, I have given '2 for the price of 1' to certain breeders using frozen semen from my stallion (Twemlows sends 3 straws per mare, and all of my stallion's mares got in foal with the first straw), but the breeders were not expecting this, and were very pleased and surprised and grateful when I told them they could use the remaining semen for another mare.

Like HTobago, there are a few studs/stallion owners who will allow you to use left over semen on another mare. You just send them the vet documents confirming the mare is in foal to the stallion and they send you the covering certificate.

Sorry - Janet I should have said that I think stallion owners should offer a decent guarantee.

As some people on here already know, my stallion's terms are Live, Healthy Foal Guarantee - no booking fee or deposit, and stud fee not payable until the breeder has a live, healthy foal on the ground.

They do have to pay the small charge for collection/shipping of semen, as this fee goes straight to either Twemlows (with frozen semen) or the stud where he stands (for chilled semen), and I have no control over it.

This is a particularly generous guarantee, and many commercial studs couldn't afford to do this, but I think they should offer some sort of guarantee, so that the poor breeder isn't left too out-of-pocket if the mare does not get in foal.

Have used frozen a lot from inside and outside EU, there don't seem to be any set terms even though many countries of origin have their own rules on fees and returns.

I the past I have bought a "job lot" with no guarantee so as many or as few foals from the batch as happened would be registered, subject to me paying any studbook return fees.

There seems to be no industry standard guarantee with Frozen and I've had all sorts of conditions. Nor are there many conception rate figures given unless of course it's good stuff then the crow about it!

Last year I had a great deal live foal guarantee from EU frozen, so I would have had to pay extra shipping fees of about £65 plus container return £45 had the mare not taken per season until she took. But I did my homework and his frozen was very good quality and mine took 1st attempt.

What you really need to be careful with is how it's defrosted and handled. The centre I use scan until the folicle is enlarged then inject to bring on ovulation scanning every 2 hrs day and night to monitor then inseminate, so they will deliver semen within 2 hrs of ovulation. They also offer endoscopic delivery at a higher price but they only recommend this on problem mares or with less fertile stallions.
Some societies also insist on DNA testing for resulting foals when they don't normally require it so there may be an extra cost.

Hope that helps!

Hi there, wherever possible I would advise on fresh/chilled semen, rather than frozen straws. Im no expert! - but it stands to reason that if you have checked out the fertility & motability of live sperm in the 08 stallion you fancy, your chances of conception are thought to increase using chilled. Sure, if you buy a bulk lot of frozen straws, you may save money - but what if the first mare to take is a stillborn, or perhaps throws a deformity, wobbler from that particular breed line? - You are stuck with additional frozen straws you might not want to use?...

Just a thought,
Scotia

i have a stallion that i sell frozen semen from and also have done chilled and fresh, and my policy is, if a person buys more than one dose and the mare gets in foal any other doses can be used on another mare, i sent some to new zealand and australia and it's becoming very popular over there i am so pleased. I have used frozen on maiden mares and they both took first time, i would suggest make sure your mare is at a good ai/stud place where they know what they are doing because with frozen it is really important that they scan regulary and inseminate at the right time

The dose is yours, but most studs will only issue one covering certificate for the first mare. So if you used the other dose on another mare you wouldnt get a covering certificate for it. (This dosent apply to all studs tho)

I got 3 strands of frozen with the stallion i used this year. My mare took first time, so ive had the other 2 distroyed.
