Hi all mare getting clipped tomoro! Have been told not to ride her for a day or two after. Does behaviour go a bit mad for a week or so after clipping? Am a bit clueless re clipping tbh so all info/advice welcome
I have no idea why you have been told that!! I clip mine and then go for a ride to make sure all the loose hair is blown away!! (full, everything off clip!)
Load of rubbish imo. With the hair gone, of course they get cold quickly unrugged, & they can only warm up by moving. So can appear more energetic, just put the energy to good use. I always hot towel after clipping to make sure any trace of hair is gone, & leaves a nice shine too.
Always ride day of a clip, they may be a little 'fresher' than usual and have a tickle in their toes due to feeling the cold a little so do make some allowances. Trot sooner than usual as well to get them warm. But you should be fine!
depends on the horse ,i have one i wouldn't dare get on straight after clipping as he's like a raving loon i can't even get a rug on him sometimes ,he starts twitching then broncing ,then rearing
he's worse after the first clip of the winter but all i do is make sure i have help available to get him over the road (our school is on other side) and let him loose in there to kick his heels up for 10mins then he's fine although a bit lively to ride the first few days
all the other horses iv'e had have been fine to ride straight away
Our Haffie is a little sharper but I think this is just because he feels more comfortable and less sweaty/miserable if that makes sense. If your worried just put an excercise sheet on and dont hang around to much.
I run a clipping service and would warn customers that their horse may be a bit lively but you certainly don't need to put off riding.
Make sure you wash your horse off after the clip as the hair and oil can sometimes cause a reaction which may be made worse with sweating and pressure from saddle etc.
I just clip and go. Yesterday I clipped my 5 year old cob for the first time and then went straight out for a hack. He was fab and clearly much happier as not hot and sweaty.
Rode my mare after she was clipped today, she was awesome, really forward. She is however twitchy after being clipped, withers/side twitch like she has a fly, this settles after a few days.
