Ok i posted about my friends horse having a lump on the side of his face, which had burst on sat with puss. She thinks he was kicked.

So vet came out before it burst and said to give bute. Prob is this horse is sold and the people want to come and collect him. She rang them about the lump bursting, and they are concerned about stangles. They have spoken to the vet and he still says he doent think it is, as not other symptoms.

So question is, why would a kick cause the puss? And can they have no other symptoms other than a lump?

Friend can understand there concern but she her horses dont got off the farm, so doesnt see how he could of got strangles, if indeed he has!!

Bit confusing!

It could just be an abcess from a thorn or a bit of grit. If it was strangles then his temperature would be high and they tend to have more than one lump. Also the lump would be under the jaw near the neck. if they are that worried they can get the vet to do tests but if there are no other symptoms it is unlikely.

Yes second that. We have a field kept old mare who had an abcess on the side of her face recently. We think it was a bite that got infected. She's fine since her owner burst it and cleaned it out.

Mare had the abcess when they people came to see her, not the friday just gone the friday before. I would have thought that if it was strangles it would of burst sooner?

No temp, not off food, no other lumps, no nasal discharge.

So the people should be ok to take her? Just that if vet swaps her to make sure the results wont be back til next week.

George has had a small lump on his face for the whole 6 years I have owned him. The vet said it is a cyst and I could have it removed, covered by the insurance THIS time, but it's not causing him any bother at the moment.

I think that would be pussy if it was to open up...

Yes thanks, i just suppose when anyone sees a lump on face they think strangles. The lady buying the horse is have stick from some of the liveries on her yard. ( when they asked where the new horse was and she explained the delay in picking her up, they jumped on her!)

It won't be strangles if there are no other signs they will be fine to pick her up and they might have to clean it to stop anymore infection but it should be fine.x
