new horse has been tripping/stumbling slightly since being shod for the first time by my existing farrier. he's a bit piegion toed and cow hocked but passed the vetting.my farrier who i think is fab thought his feet were good and shod him with road nails at my req. why is he trippy? what has/hasn't farrier done thats different??

was the horse tripping/stumbling before being shod? At risk of sounding a bit pedantic how will we know what your farrier has/hasnt done differently you will have to ask him.

Since he has not met or shod the horse before he will not have a lot to go on shoeing wise, you need to let him know that this has developed so he can do something different to fix/alleviate the problem and work out where it stems from.

Aside from the problems you have already highlighted maybe he didnt take enough toe off.

thank you,

no horse didn't stumble/trip before i got him, or as far as i can possibly be aware of.

i have already left him a quick message saying he's bit trippy etc so will wait to see what he thinks/says, my first thought was he maybe didn't take enough off, but if anything i think they actually look quite cut back so don't know if this is a side effect of taking away too much?

It is possible that this can cause some tripping especially if the toes were long to start with

If this is the case the tripping should subside once the horse gets used to the shorter toes was it shod recently?

If you had your horse vetted with a blood test keep your sample safe and if the tripping continues, get it tested. Tripping is an early sign of navicular and he may have been buted when you got him.
