hi
you may have seen my other thread but wanted to ask a question-
teddy was found to have high ggt when we had a full liver panel. he has since been off work 7wk and in this time has put on 6 inches on his girth region. he was only in light work 10mins walk and 5mins trot 3 times a week and was a skelton when we first got him.
he is only on sugar beet, chop and a mix plus a large large hay net in the evening.
he has no sighs of liver damage expect stuggling to put on weight and is a bight eyed full of fun four yr old.

is this a good sign he is putting on weight (6inches) or just due to no work???
im thinking it good but well i am his mummy so feel free to let me know what you think.
feed is as vet instructored

(excuse spelling im dyslexic):D

Hi hw1. Tricky one. If the original symptom of struggling to put on weight led to the diagnosis of liver problems, then either the treatment has worked brilliantly and he's now putting weight on again OR (OR OR OR) the liver problem remains and what you are observing is oedema in his belly, ie free fluid that his body is struggling to process properly. I'd use his overall demeanour to make an educated layman's guess, ie if stuffing his face, happy as larry, farting about in the field as per normal 4yr old, etc etc then I'd be happy he was recovering. But if he's down, lethargic, quiet etc then I'd have to say, I'd be worried at a 6" increase in girth size. Of course, weigh tapes and other such measuring methods aren't 100% so re-measure at different times of the day. Is his whole body looking plumper, ie crest, bum, etc? Or just a bloated belly? Any concerns at all, ring your vet for advice xxx

hi
him bum and ribs are now covered so as a precaution rang vet, she is really please so called of the biopsy for thursday and is just doing an ultra sound and bloods repeated instead.

He also had flakey skin on his neck when we first got him and this has now gone.

both me my vet and the senior vet are all confused yet very very pleased!

horses? who'd have em?
why cant you have a button on them so they can answer your questions for 5mins a month??? would make things so much easier:D

Wonderful news h. I think you and ned have been very lucky. Think he'd be down to 8 lives by now if he was a cat lol x

GGT has come down to 134 and been advised to start very very light work just ten mins walk in had 3/4 a week for 2week then ten mins ridden!!

yep agree down to 8 lives but im over the moon and vet shocked too:D:D:D
