So I have got the bug for doing some more dressage, done a couple of tests on my newly broken 4yr old and had some nice remarks so I have gone out and bought a rather nice Wintec dressage saddle ( bargain off ebay!! ).

Ok so saddle now bought but how can I guess what girth size I need - he is a 48" on a Wintec GP............sorry I don't really know anyone nearby that could lend me a few to try.

Also what make of girth would you recommend?

My mare has a 52'' With her GP & 28'' dressage so I would say 24/26 but best to measure once saddle arrives it took me several guesses to get it right particularly as she fluctuates quite a bit :p I have a thorogood for everyday schooling which scrubs up nicely and i have just got a lovely leather HKM for competitions (eBay Bargain) :o

It really depends on the length of the girth straps and style of saddle. Mine is a mono flap and I use an elasticated 22" on most, rangeing from 14.2 to 16.3 but they are event horses. The others are deeper girthed rangeing from 16.2 to 17.2 also eventers and have an elasticated 24". I like the Mark Todd leather ones.

Would you recommend the elastic ones for a younger horse in preference to the wintec range - thanks

ok so this may help

in my old wintec DR my horse had a 26in girth but in his SJ saddle needed a 50 in

I guess I am saying 24/26 inch

My horse used to wear a 48" girth with her old jumping saddle. On her monoflap dressage saddle she has an 20" girth. Now she has a monoflap jumping saddle she has a 22" girth. The 20" is too small on the jumping saddle, but the 22" is too big on the dressage saddle! Not much help as I guess it depends on the saddle! I know several people say normal girth length - 20", but I have yet to meet a horse that lives up to that theory! In all the horses I have had I have yet to come across one that needed bigger than a 24" for a monoflap jumping saddle and 22" for a dressage saddle. That is including a 16.2hh ID!
