Hi, I gave up riding many years ago however I own 3 horses that are ridden by my wife & daughter. Both of them are insured as are the horses. I turn out, bring in, hold for farrier & handle the horses at shows. I have no insurance on myself but have now realised that I really should after being ragged around a few times over the last few months.

Now the question, could someone point me in the right direction for insurance & give me some idea of which company & a rough idea of how much it would cost me?

Thank you in advance.

We have BHS gold membership and Harry Hall one club. They’re both similar, but I have the BHS one as it’s supporting a charity, and the HH one because I buy a lot of their products so the discounts make it worthwhile. The BHS family gold will cover all of you as well as anyone else handling your horses I think? ?

Tbh it depends on what you want the insurance for.
Most horse policies should allow you to add personal accident cover on, which covers people handling the horse (usually with the owners permission and where no payment is being made), ie it's specific to the horse, not the handler/s.
This however is usually fairly basic, as would the personal accident cover offered by BHS etc. It's usually a lump sum in the event of a loss of limb/sight or death, possibly some dental cover.
Rider specific insurance is a thing and more specific and will cover things like if you're hospitalised because of the injuries etc, however it doesn't usually provide cover with horses you own.
If it's cover incase you're injured and then have time off work you may be better off looking at loss of earnings cover rather than something horse specific.

What insurance do you actually want?

Liability? This should be covered under the horses current policy

Personal Accident? Critical Illness? Income protection? There are a huge number of providers, don’t necessarily need to be equine companies - you can just use a comparison site or broker. It just depends on the level of cover you want

Public liability - (if the horse got away from you at a show and injured someone) would be covered under their insurance - no harm in you being a BHS member for £65 odd in case you are worried you might be personally liable

If you are worried about personal accident/ injury or loss of earnings I would avoid specialist horse providers(who will be more expensive and narrow in cover) and use a wider policy that would cover those things in all scenarios (including handling horses, skiing, car accidents etc etc.)
As others have said above.
