Question to all of you who do your own poo picking

Try to do it twice a week or sisters bf comes over on a weekend and we take two big wheel barrows out a clear the feild for the mates, my two lami's get done twice a week as they are on restricted.

At the moment every day, I did miss a day once due to being extremely busy and boy I knew about it the next day!!! The two girls fill a wheelbarrow between them every night (they're in during the day) and I use a poop scoop which still isn't big enough for Genie's elephant poos!

In the winter it may have to be every other day due to work. :-(

What set up do you have OP, why can the other owner decieded she doesn't want to do it in a shared field and you have to do it for her or leave them in a dung filled field !! How many acres are you sharing ?

I used to do mine daily in the summer and every couple of days in the winter, but now I'm on full I don't do it :D

Two barrows daily for two horses. Dont always clear field tend to do it in sections.especially in this hot weather. The sharing a field with a non poo picker is a real pain, been there, done that, dont intend to do it again !

I do mine everyday, and usually it's a barrowful.

I use a shavings fork and rubber gloves to pick up any odd bits or to get poo's out of the longer patches of grass.

Well, I say 'I', if hubby's about he normally does it as he finds it theraputic ;)

At least daily and MORE if wet. I do it often to keep on top of it and because I thought after 48 hours the worm larvae hatch start to climb up the grass. Once every 5 days is practically shutting the stable door after the horse has gone? Rain tends to wash them into flat puddles - well, the sort of rain we've had lately!

I use a bucket and rubber glove and get every last bit up that I can.

And I cross graze in winter.

How often do you do it?

My mare used to be in her own paddock as she was a lami pony. I'd poo pick it everyday when the weather was dry or 3 times a week when it was wet.

I now have 2 ponies and they share with another mare. The field looks a right state, but the owner of the other mare is anti poo picking.

I hate to see a dirty field, specially as there are so many flies around.

So, how often do you poo pick?

I used to share with a lazy madame. I used to pick her's up for a while then I fenced mine off from hers and just did mine. Can you not ask yard owner to insist she does her share? I used to pick morning and night keeps it clean and only takes about 10 mins in a smaller paddock ie an acre rather than 5:)

For the two boys who are out 24/7, I do it once a day but am deeply envious of the small amounts people are talking about - 4 barrow loads each day and it wears me down! Counted only last night's 'load' this morning ( how sad am I?) - 15 piles and they are not small! They are a Friesian and a cob who share an acre. On the other hand, the WB and the TB do minuscule amounts in comparison and are only out during the day so do their fields (each an acre) once a week.

Anyone got any tips on making this easier? Are the poo picking machines any good?

As often as possible when my boy was still here - I'm another one who hates dirty fields. As to method, I use a rubber glove and the scoop part of a poo picker - find the forks a faff and they make my back ache. They are also not good at getting it all at once whereas I can just tip it on with a glove and get three or four poos in each scoop before emptying into the barrow. Agree with the poster who says her husband finds it therapeutic but then absolutely hate then having to push the barrow for miles (while it feels like it) and through muddy gateways etc.

I used to always use just rubber gloves but now the boy is on a field with short grass find its super easy to just use a shavings fork xx

Everyday, he is in a paddock atm so it doesn't take five minutes. I use the speediskip too, the best thing I have found. I share a field (but not the paddock) and it doesn't get done, not quite sure why though.

Just looked at a speediskip, (anything to make poo picking easier :)) the rake looks quite short, does it make your back ache ?

My boy is on his own and is out at night in summer and in at night in winter. I pooh pick every day with poop scoop as no bending down to save my back. Takes about 5 mins...I love my field to be clean and stops the parasite cycle so I worm count every 3 months and all has been fine. I also look out for any weeds and move the electric fence as I strip graze. My friend who is the only other livery with her 2 ponies that share stable and paddock also pooh picks daily. We have a lot of grazing enabling us to rest and rotate it plus we have a couple of dense acres that will be used for late cut of hay soon. :D

The rakes are fab.. I had a few ops on my right hand 2.5 years ago and the rake is the only thing for poo picking that doesn't kill my hand to this day..

OH lost it in the poo pile though, gutted! It was a birthday pressie..

Mine is living out so 5 barrows a week. Sometimes I do it daily, othertimes do it all over the weekend. It just depends when I get the time.

Poo pick every day. As some of the others I hate a messy field. Nightmare when I've been on holiday mind.

Worm count every 3 months and No requirement to worm apart from the one that you can't trace through worm counts and has to be one once a year. Like to think I'm not putting unnecessary chemicals in my ponies or the ground for that matter and it's cheaper! Wonder what the case would be if I didn't poo pick every day. Sheep also graze the land in the summer - I know that helps too with worms.

we have 2 in a total of 23 acres
- 9 of that is unused for horses due to the amount of rabbit holes
- 9 of that is winter paddock which does not get poopicked, just harrowed in the spring and left til august, then sheep on for 6-8wks before the horses go back in there.
- 2 of that is woodland (not poo picked either
- 3 of that is summer paddock and we poopick that approx weekly, and Dad runs a little pasture topper over the rough patches a couple of times in the summer and once when we take the horses out of the for the winter.

you see, different management system, but we haven't had anything in the worm count for 4 years now, so they only get the once yearly one too.

For 2 big horses, in the summer, once a day, if out 24/7 then twice a day, in the winter 2-3 times a week. Use a shavings fork - couldn't use the pooper scoopers or gloves, all that bending would do my back in

OP, is it not a yard requirement that you poo-pick? If not, you need to try to come to an amicable arrangement with her. If you're doing her a favour by having your horse in with hers as hers won't be on her own, then she should be on the back foot with it really.

Three horses in our field - out during the day/in at night, and we poo pick every day - in the evenings. Comes to a barrowload max. Each owner does two (set) days a week (mine are Fri and Sat) and then one owner's sharer does the remaining day.

We've had egg counts done twice in the 8 months I've been at the yard and both times they were all clear (less than 25) so we'll just worm for tapeworm in November - saved us money on worming and got to be healthier for the horses.

I really don't know why people make such a meal out of poo picking - if it's done daily (or if horses are out 24/7 twice daily) it takes 5 minutes.

P

Everyday without fail as my two fill one wheelbarrow a day and I hate doing two loads of wheelbarrow emptying! Clear their night field out in the morning and then leave wheelbarrow by fence and then add the poos from the small turnout paddock where they are during day in the evening then empty it. Use a poopascooper to do it.

However we have chickens and I find they kick around any poo they find and make the job impossible so I tend to clear any up as soon as I see them/ am around the yard (horses at end of garden so it's a bit easier!)

I would have a chat with your paddock sharer and explain no happy, benefits of poo picking etc and would she like to pay either your wormer bills or you to pick up the poo. Can't understand people not poo picking small fields, can understand if lots of acres but surely you clean a stable why not a small field?!?!

Every 2 or 3 days. Person I share with wants it done every day but I really don't see the point and think it takes more time trawling around looking for poo so I am moving before we fall out (well that's not the only reason but I did decide on grazing for an easy life!)

My horse is in a huge field with 2 other horses. We recently had to introduce a rota after first one then the other owners told me they hadn't done any for weeks when muggins here was up there at 9pm at night to make sure it got done! Now we have a rota where one person is responsible for the poo picking and ragworting for a whole week so we get 2 weeks off. On my week I try to clear it mid week and then on the Sunday before we swap over.
