Hi I am looking to get two dogs and am planning to take them to the yard that I work everyday, im looking for something of mid to large size, obviously i understand dogs that grow up round horses get used to it as our old dogs did but just wondering if anyone knew of good breeds they had had?
Also does anyone know where to get hold of Otterhound pups?

Well my lab puppy is fine so far - and I know lots of labs that are very good around horses - there will always be exceptions though!

My parents have a border collie who is rubbish around horses (lunges at them when they move), even though we take her to the yard alot, she's not really allowed off the lead any more around horses. But I know collies that are good too.

A friend of mine had a lovely irish wolfhound that was great with the horses too.

Otterhounds are hard to get hold of aren't they? Have you tried the Kennel club - they might have a list of breeders on their register that you could contact.

Good luck!

I have 3 Jack Russells, they're excellent around horses and I ride off rode with mine. Lots of my puppy homes are horsey people too - a must have for every lorry

The other breed we've got, the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla are also very good around horses, a couple of homes we've sold these to have again got horses too.

I know people with Weimeraners, GSDs, Border Ts, I think any breed really if it's trained and socialised properly

My Ridgeback is excellent around the yard despite being a hound. Various liveries of mine have had many different dogs including labs, terriers, collies, staffies all have been fine.

I think any dog will be ok it just depends how they are trained.

Have always loved the otterhound but have heard they are very rare nowadays.

I know must say saw them on crufts thought 'how gorgeous'!
It's a nightmare looking read a bit on the internet that most breeders only breed one litter a year, going to need forward planning by the looks!
Thanks for all your help people, keep them coming!

Some people have more than one litter a year. The best thing you can do is to decide on a breed, ring the secretary of the breed club and have a chat about the breed and breeders, they can give you a list of people either on the breeders list or people they know are planning a litter. Then, if I were you, ring them up and stick your name on their puppy waiting list.

Hope that helps

they too r rescues.

have considered rescue but didnt kow how it would stand them having to be with me all day at work?
I love the idea of giving something a home thats in desperate need of one!

All mine have been rescue.......they actually spend allday with me and I take them to work.....like I say Akita and Rotti......I got them both at the age of two, I do alot of rescue work and we get them in allthe time

If you have had dogs before u will have a better idea of how to train and handle them......thats not to say you wont get one thats good already, I took our newest to stables yesterday 2 year old wire haired pointer......he looked a little funny at first.....a few harsh words later he was off playing with my rotti.

Supose it also depends on how patient the horses are too.

thanks alot thats really helpful, would love a rescue dog! Now all I need is to hunt down an Otterhound! he he
Thanks all most helpful, H&H forums are brilliant!

Hi, I always go for second hand dogs as they need homes more than puppies, they generally get into less trouble but you do have to be careful to explore their history or nature before committing. Have a look at the Batersea Dogs home web site. The information they give is the kind of stuff you need to know. Also collie crosses tend to have the best characteristics or each breed - at least mine all have and my saluki/border collie cross taught himself everything you need to know about chasing yard brooms, fetching water that has escaped from hoses, reducing the amount of feed in a bucket, which stables were best to sleep in and which commands are meant for the horse and which for him!!! He really was a super brain. My German shepherd/border collie used to jump up onto the from of the saddle (yes she was large collie size) when we were out to avoid confrontation with others - the pony was obviously very well behaved too! I also used to look after a demented labrador from a really deranged litter, he was brilliant around the horses but being golden he used to love rolling in the pooooooh to! Good luck
