Question ? ? ? ....

I think it's about 18mths... but can vary a bit.
My 2 boys started showing an interest in the girlies before that... Whether they could've done anything about it is a different matter

The reason I ask is .... well , 2 kids I teach and are close friends with their parents , they have just found out one of their 13.2hh irish cob mare has had a gorgeous black filly foal a few days ago, she had been running with a yearling colt , he is now 2 and they only found out yesterday morning when they went up the mountain to bring her down , They had been told by a farmer a day before that he had seen something . obviously thought the farmer was seeing things .

Anyways big shock , the filly is the double of the mare ( shes black with a tiny white star , filly is the same) all is well , you want to see where she had foaled , think marshy , wet , cold mountain) .

Anyhoos , they have another 2 riding ponies that are also mares that ran with this same colt , one defo looks to be in foal , she has been ridden since ... she was always a good doer and she has had a foal before , so it was difficult to tell , but not anymore i dont think ... must get pics of this gorgeous filly and pics of this other mare , see what you lot think . She is going to be scanned possibly tomorrow . 1 little bundle and possibly 2 more :P :P

It is perfectly possible at just 6 months and certainly by twelve months. Obviusly they aren't all capable of siring at that age, but................
