OK, so PF is a tiny bit lame on her near hind which was quite swollen this morning but went down when I walked her. I've asked vet about antibiotics and have emailed some pics to her. In the meantime she said to give her some bute.
I know one isn't supposed to question one's vet, but if PF's really not in a great deal of pain (mostly a bit stiff I think) would it be ok NOT to give her the bute? On the other hand, would the bute help reduce the swelling?
Hmmm... I expect I'll just give her the bute!

well im just about to put my mare infoal and the stud owner said no bute, as she has bone spavin and has off days, so probably not

Bute is a pain killer AND anti inflamatory so WILL reduce the swelling. Antibiotics however, will only stop a secondary infection developing and if there is an problem with an infection then will mask over it for a few days until the Antibiotics are out of the horse's system.
