1. How old is your horse?
12, 3, 4, 2. But I'll concentrate on the first 2 because they have travelled more.

2. Has it travelled lots or rarely?
Rarely. A couple of times a year tops.

3. Does your horse travel in a trailer or lorry?
Trailer

4. Does your horse travel well?
No. The 12 year old, Doris, was fine travelling until she went out on loan. Now she hates it. She shakes the whole time she travels and takes a lot of convincing to load. She also panicked last year whilst unloading and managed to fall down the ramp on her back.

The 3 year old will load into anything.

5. Does your horse travel alone or in company usually?
Alone. The 12 year old is too wide to have company. She takes up most of the space.

6. Does your horse travel forwards, backwards or sideways?
forwards

7. If not, what does your horse do to make you think they are a bad traveller?
Doris sweats up and shakes the whole time she is in the trailer.

8. Inside your lorry/trailer is it;
a. Dark? Not really.
b. Vented? yes
c. Partitioned? Not normally as Doris won't load with the partition in.
d. Do you tie up hay inside? Yes
e. Is your horse loose inside or tied? tied up.

9. Does your horse load well?
12 year old - no
3 year old - yes

10. If not;
a. Is if affected by the direction your horse faces?
Have never tried.
b. Is it affected by the horse having company or not?
Don't know. Impossible for Doris to have companion.
c. Does removing the partition help?
Yes. She refuses to load with a partition in at all.

11. Do you load your horse in a head collar or dually head collar?
I load her in a rope halter and then put a normal headcollar on to tie her up.

12. Do you travel in boots or bandages?
No.

13. How long do you travel your horse for?
No more than half hour.

14. Does the time you travel for affect behaviour of the horse during and after the journey?
Not sure. Haven't travelled very far.

15. Does your horse sweat whilst travelling?
The 12 year old sweats up badly. 3 year old is not bothered.

16. Do you travel in daylight?
Almost always

17. Do you travel at night?
Have loaded 12 year old twice ar night.

a. If yes does your horse behave the same as during daylight?
Actually, she behaved better but this may have been because we loaded her in a very dark field and she could see better in the trailer.

18. Is your horse always consistent with bad/good loading?
She used to load well until I let her out on loan. I do not know what happened to her whilst on loan. I think she may have played up and they beat her into loading or something.

If you have any other notes to add to this questionnaire please leave details below.

1. How old is your horse? We are not sure - somewhere between 9 and 12

2. Has it travelled lots or rarely? He has travelled a fair bit

3. Does your horse travel in a trailer or lorry? He will travel in both but much prefers loading onto a lorry.

4. Does your horse travel well? He doesn't fidget or kick, but he does call and sweat up if travelled alone. In company, he is perfectly fine.

5. Does your horse travel alone or in company usually? He has done both - he much prefers company.

6. Does your horse travel forwards, backwards or sideways? He has done all three - no real issue with any of them.

7. If not, what does your horse do to make you think they are a bad traveller?

8. Inside your lorry/trailer is it;
a. Dark? At night, yes!
b. Vented? Yes
c. Partitioned? Yes
d. Do you tie up hay inside? Yes
e. Is your horse loose inside or tied? Tied

9. Does your horse load well? On lorries, yes. On trailers, no.

10. If not;
a. Is if affected by the direction your horse faces? No.
b. Is it affected by the horse having company or not? No.
c. Does removing the partition help? No. I think he just finds trailers unstable and claustrophobic.

11. Do you load your horse in a head collar or dually head collar? He doesn't need a rope headcollar to load - only to unload (is a bit enthusiastic about getting off) so he wears one under his regular headcollar.

12. Do you travel in boots or bandages? Have used both.

13. How long do you travel your horse for? Furthest he has travelled while we've had him is 3 hours, however he was imported from Poland when he was young.

14. Does the time you travel for affect behaviour of the horse during and after the journey? Yes - he travels better over longer distances.

15. Does your horse sweat whilst travelling? Yes, but only if alone.

16. Do you travel in daylight? Have travelled in both daylight and at night.

17. Do you travel at night? Yes.
a. If yes does your horse behave the same as during daylight? No difference.

18. Is your horse always consistent with bad/good loading? Yes. Always loads beautifully on lorries. Always takes a few gos with trailers.

18. Is your horse always consistent with bad/good loading?
one consistently good, the other unpredicable. No apparent causes for being difficult to load (although consistently good on backwards facing trailer and / or with company) on forward facing trailer alone, will load fine sometimes and not others. Always goes on ok but sometimes shoots off backwards before I can get breaching bar done up if I'm on my own, if I have help he's fine.

I am very lucky in that all my horses both home bred and bought in travel very well. The two I bought were appalling loaders to begin with then they became automatic self-loaders.

My horse travels without a partition because he's a long horse and he'd be a bit squashed if I left it in. He's very relaxed travelling, he barely moves and he nibbles on a hay net. He's an ex-race horse and ex-Masters hunt horse so he will have travelled a lot before I got him.

Thank you! :D

I travelled him a lot in 2009 and he was always far too over excited, didn't travel at all in 2010 and when we tried him in 2011 he was like a different horse, travelled calmly in company, unloaded well and was relaxed when he arrived. He used to be a racehorse so has done a lot of travelling to exciting places, it's taken him a while to realise dressage doesn't involved quite the same levels of adrenaline!
