I’m hopefully registering to compete BS within the next few months with my horse. I never did BS on ponies so this is all new to me. We are current unaffiliating at 80/90cm so once we are happy and consistent at 1m we will be affiliating. However I have a few silly questions that I can’t seem to find answers for on the website. If anybody could help it would be much appreciated ?
  • Do you have to get four (?) double clears at British Novice before moving onto Discovery classes, and so on? Or can you jump at the next level up without all of your double clears?
  • Once a horse has so many points are they out of competing at a certain level (e.g. British Novice) forever or just with their current rider?
  • What are open classes for? Are they for experience/to gain a record but don’t contribute to double clears?
  • Once you have your double clears for a certain level (e.g. BN) do you then move onto Discovery classes and wait for BN Second Rounds? How long do you have between getting your double clears and the next round?
  • How high are the fences in British Novice Second Rounds?
  • What is the difference between C1 and C2 shows? Can I go to either one?
  • Do they usually increase the fence height for the jump-off?

  • - jump what ever you like. No minimum standard to jump disco etc
  • Once a horse has so many points are they out of competing at a certain level (e.g. British Novice) forever or just with their current rider?
  • - Forever. Horse has points for life
  • What are open classes for? Are they for experience/to gain a record but don’t contribute to double clears?
  • - They're for people who want to compete at a certain height but horse has too many points for restricted class. ie 90cm open when out of BN. Also useful to win a bit of cash to cover diesel if you have a good horse.
  • Once you have your double clears for a certain level (e.g. BN) do you then move onto Discovery classes and wait for BN Second Rounds? How long do you have between getting your double clears and the next round?
  • - you do whatever you want. nothing says you have to move on to disco unless horse out of points. I used to jump BN and Disco at same comp.
  • How high are the fences in British Novice Second Rounds?
  • -110cm I believe but could be wrong on that one. Been out of BS for a few years
  • What is the difference between C1 and C2 shows? Can I go to either one?
  • Do they usually increase the fence height for the jump-off?
  • - absolutely do. Normally by 10cm so expect to jump 1mtr in a BN jump off.

1) You can compete at whatever level you like at any point. You will only not be allowed to compete at BN, Discovery etc if you have too many points - in which case you will need to do Open classes. The only thing is if you get too many BN wins you might accidentally jump yourself out of Discovery etc if that makes sense...so keep an eye on how many points you have!

2) Forever, doesn't matter who the rider is

3) These are for horses that have too many points to jump BN, Disco, NC etc. So a very experienced horse with lots of points would need to jump open classes. They don't contribute to your qualifying double clears at each level because the horse isn't allowed to qualify for 2nd rounds anyway.

4) Yes once you have your double clears you can keep jumping whatever level you like and I'm pretty sure you can still do the 2nd rounds no matter how many points you acrue in the time between getting your double clears and the second rounds - but I am not 100% on this! 2nd rounds are usually at the start of the summer, so the time you have depends on how quickly you get your 4 double clears!

5) I believe they start at 1.05 and go up to 1.15m.

6) Yes you can go to either one. C1 shows have amateur classes. These are classes that any amateur rider can jump on any horse - so even horses that have a lot of points, grade As etc. These allow you to qualify for a separate 2nd round and final at 85cm, 95cm, 1.05 and I think 1.15. The amateur championships are usually at Aintree in the winter.

For these you need 1 double clear to qualify for the 2nd round at the respective height, and 5 double clears to qualify directly for the final. These are really good shows to go to if your horse has too many points to jump BN, disco etc but you still want to qualify for 2nd rounds/a big show.

7) Yes usually around 5-10cm depending on the venue. Venues that build small will have most fences at 95cm in the jump off of a British Novice, with a couple fences at 1m. Some venues may have the entire jump off at 1m.
