I've recently had a change of horse (horses to be precise) and I'm now in the position to potentially start getting out and competing after a hefty break.

However new horses are very different and what I would be doing with them would therefore vary. Is there a jacket that people would suggest that would cover most activities? Having taken on two horses money is tighter than usual!

It would be a mix of low level dressage, hunter trials, perhaps hunting and maybe an ODE or two.... Both horses are coloured. I'm thinking tweed might be the most versatile but will I have to buy both tweed and a show jacket?

It's been so long I can't even picture what people wear....!

Thanks in advance!

A tweed is acceptable for all activities although if hunting regularly you may find a decent hunting jacket is essential otherwise there is no need to get a plain jacket.

Just had another thought.... Will be wearing a body protector for most activities. I've worn one over a black jacket before but obviously this blended more. What do people do about tweed and body protectors?!

I do everything in tweed. Dressage, SJ, eventing, autumn hunting etc. I only switch to my heavy wool hunting coat for hunting proper. Tweed is never incorrect at the lower levels competing nor with most packs out hunting. (Particularly if you are visiting or only hunt occasionally)

I don’t normally wear a body protector bar XC so you would have to try it on over. Underneath always looks horrendous and means you end up with a jacket 3 sizes too big! I believe some air jacket manufacturers now do a tweed colour. Alternatively a darker colour (dark blue or brown) may blend better with the body protector.

Most hunter trials, arena eventing etc. allow you to wear XC colours or jacket and stock. The majority will opt for XC colours but these don’t need to be expensive. Cheap long sleeve ‘technical’ sports tops work a treat and are much more comfortable to wear with a body protector. :)

Tweed is good for everything, but I think navy flatters ladies a lot more than either tweed or black and goes with either cream or white breeches. A lovely plain navy jacket will be smart enough for everything and if you did want to dress up a little more e.g. for dressage, you can always stick some bling on the pony and white breeches on yourself. Navy also looks good with either black or brown boots.

Says I from the corner of dressage doom, covered in sparkles and gloss :p

Since I'm on box rest (haha) with nothing better to do, here are some links to a variety of really smart navy jackets of varying prices!

Even as someone who obsesses over bling, I think this is a really lovely plain one...

Haha, love it. I have a navy tweed from Shires that I do lots of unaff RC type events in. Def works fine for low level dressage, jumping, hunting, and showing. It's a bit hot for summer though so have just bought a thinner navy show jacket.

I would go with tweed for now and i think a body protector over it looks fine, i never usually notice what other people are wearing unless its ultra bright colours or bling. I wear a brown tweed with either a chestnut or a bright bay. I do think they look particularly smart with coloureds.

If they are piebald i would go with a blue or navy tweed and if they are brown i would do forest green by choice.

Once you have got out a bit and seen what others are wearing then you could see if you want a show jacket. I think if you find the right place you can pick a tweed up really cheaply 2nd hand and after that i think they hold their value quite well.
