Questions on Winter Turnout Rugs

I have about 15 rugs :o which get replaced every year or 2 ... Max gram I think is 375 and thats a Mark Todd turnout

I have:

1 x Shires lightweight, no fill
1 x Wetherbeeta medium weight, 200g
1 x Rambo heavyweight with neck, 340g
1 x cooler (also use this as stable rug the night before shows in summer).

She isn't clipped yet, but will have an Irish clip in October. TBH she pretty much lives in her medium weight over winter, with the Rambo for the very worst of the winter. I may invest in another medium weight this year, as a spare.

Used to have many more rugs, but sold a load as I am skint. For a couple of them, made more selling them 2nd hand on ebay than I paid for them new. Crazy...

I know one girl on my yard has at least 50 different rugs for one horse :D

I have 11 (soon to be 12) rugs, one of which is a PE buster trio, which saves buying many, many turnouts. That one can be layered up to about 600g, I think. If this winter is anything like the last one, I'll need them!

Currently got:

1 Shires l/w - no fill, but full neck
1 weatherbeta l/w - no fill, no neck.
1 Robinsons m/w 250 gm, full neck
1 fleece, which will go under lightweight with neck tonight probably, as it is going to be cold!
I could really do with an inbetween the no fill and the m/w 250gm, but will make do with the fleece for now, as I think a heavyweight will be more important.

Oh Dear  not sure if I should list mine!!

My sensitive tb gets a trace clip and she has:
2 X lightweight (if one gets wet) Mark Todd and Rhino
1 x 200g without neck JHL
1 x 220g weatherbeeta with neck
1 x 340g Mark todd with neck
1 x 100g rambo liner for underneath others if needed

Really recommend the mark todd heavies as they have long necks which reach right to the ears even when their head is bent down eating :P so long that sometimes we come to the yard and 1 or 2 ears are bent down due to neck over the top lol looks like shes bald! also they kept her super warm!

My 3 year old isn;t clipped and he has:
1 x light weight (shares mares plus we have a weatherbeeta though it isn't water proof anymore)
1 x 200g ish brown requiste rug (pretty rubbish but keeps him warm!) plus attachable neck
1 x 300g derby house (haven't tried it yest so interesting to see if its any good brand)

lol as you can see we have tried nearly every type!
Best waterproof and toughness is rhino and shires (the toughest shires i.e. highest ripstop)
Out of them all, weatherbeeta is by far the worst. for fit on our narrow tb and rubbish waterproofness.

only one we haven't tried is premier equine!

My TB has:

Weatherbeeta standard no fill
Weatherbeeta standard 200g
Weatherbeeta half-neck 200g
+ full neck 200g which I hardly use as it rubs his neck
Premier Equine 300g with detachable neck
Weatherbeeta half-neck 400g

Toby (native x) has:

Saxon standard no-fill
Weatherbeeta full neck no-fill
Weatherbeeta standard 200g
Premier Equine 200g with detachable neck

Both will have a trace if clipped.

Welsh mare is usually unrugged but she has:

Weatherbeeta standard no-fill
Weatherbeeta half-neck 200g

I think Weatherbeeta should start giving me free rugs as I've bought so many over the years! I find they fit nicely and last well. I've been pleased with the Premier Equine ones too - lovely and deep. I like Horsewear rugs but they're so expensive! Wouldn't ever buy a Masta turnout although I have a couple of stable rugs which are ok.

1 x Amigo LW T/O (No fill)
1 x Premier Equine LW (40g)
1 x Premier Equine MW (200g)
1 x Premier Equine HW (450g)
1 x Amigo HW (350g)

Lexi lives in her Turnout rugs, therefore, I do not have any stable rugs (other than fleeces/coolers :))

Dawn has:
  • Shire typhoon rain rug - used for an under rain rug when its very wet but not too cold (its old and not as waterproof as it was.
  • IV horse summer sheet - no fill, with detachable neck
  • Slumberdown - 200g
  • Masta Ballistic (very old but still works well!) - 360(?)g
  • Ruggles - with detachable neck - 100g
  • Bucas Polar Fleece
  • Shires fly rug
  • 2 or 3 other rugs that i don't use as they are old and worn, don't fit well or aren't very waterproof
Harry has
  • Shires rain rug - no fill - same purpose as above
  • IV Horse summer sheet (same as above)
  • ruggles 100g rug with detachable neck
  • IV horse winter turnout - 200g
  • Slumberdown - 200g - this rug has a different feel and look to material although meant to be exactly the same as dawn's! it isn't as waterproof or as strong, i use as an underug in very cold weather
  • Weatherbeeta fly rug - don't like the fit and use only for short spells
  • weatherbeeta polar fleece
  • Again, a few other rugs i no longer use

They both have stable rugs which are rarely used and a shared weatherbeeta polar fleece for shows.

I wont give you the list for my old horse, there was a lot :o

New boy, who will be fully clipped, has

Turn out
1 Shires lw on fill
1 Robinsons own brand LW/MW 100g no neck
1 JHL MW 220g no neck
1 JHL MW 250g with neck
will be getting a JHL HW 350g with neck for when it get really cold

Stable
1 Mark Todd LW
1 MT MW no neck
1 MT under rug with neck
Will be getting a HW with detachable neck at some point, either MT or JHL.
Rambo cooler
Weatherbeeter fleece with neck (picked up the wrong one by mistake, couldnt be bothered to take it back)
Rambo Newmarket fleece for travelling

I really like Premier rugs and Rambo but as he is still growing and filling out i wont spend the money on a rug to last one winter. I have had no probs with JHL and MT rugs so will stick to them.

I am something of a recovering rug addict :) I down sized from far too many to:

sweat rug
tartan summer sheet
Masta stable rug 200g approx
Shires snug rug 500g

cow print lightweight rug- derby house no fill
Amigo turnout with detachable neck (200g)
Rambo duo with 300g and 400g liners
