Hi everyone

Ok I have a few questions and hope that maybe you more experienced peeps can help.

1. Bess has started to mess around when we are in a group lesson once she gets to the front of the ride and we have to stand still. In the past she has always stood really nicely but now she often turns round and I have a fight getting her to stand still. Any advice?

2. She has also started to kind of throw her head up and down when standing still, mainly towards end of lesson, as if she is impatient or something?

3. When I bought her I was advised to get a running martingale which I did but as she never throws her head high and evades the bit does she really need this?

4. When cantering on one reign she seems to always go off on the wrong leg even if I start her in a corner. Any advice?

Sorry if you have got this far you deserve a medal.

thanks

Hi,

To be honest, these are the type of questions best asked to your riding instructor as they can watch you and your horse and thus will be much more clued up to your situation as they can obviously see!

I would maybe book some private lessons too, if funds will allow to get a little one on one time.

Can't help with advice for the messing about, but if I don't put a martingale on Bob does chuck his head about. Strange as he doesn't even try if he's wearing it - he is obviously paying attention when he's being tacked up!

My partners horse always used to strike off on the wrong leg in canter, turned out the saddle wasnt fitting right, now we have a nice well fitting saddle on him and he hasnt done it again, could be worth checking that for canter leg?

My istructror says your horse wearing a running martingale is like you wearing a seat belt in a car. You don't wear it because you are going to crash, you wear it INCASE you crash, then it is there to protect you. If you horse wears a running martingale, when they are going correctly it has no effect, but IF they chuck their head up to evade it is there to help. Hope that makes sense to you. PLUS the neckstap on a martingale can come in very useful at times!
