Hello all just joined so a "brand newbie" who is wondering if you would be so kind as to give me a little/lot of advice!

We (my wife and I) currently own a 16.3h mare and are looking to get another over the winter to bring on in the spring/summer just simply for hacking, schooling and popping over a few jumps.

We have seen a prospective purchase within our price range but the horse has been out of work for just under a year due to the owner becoming ill and having saddled herself with 3 other horses hence not having time/energy.

I was wondering as prospective buyers what questions would you be asking (I am pretty confident we will cover most but wanted a wider scope as I am sure we will forget something along the way!)

We would be looking for the horse to be vetted regardless but I don't want to go away from the viewing thinking "damn I never thought of that".

Google "horse buying checklist" I found it invaluable to keep me in check, asking sensible questions & not getting carried away with excitement.
When phoning sellers ask open questions, not ones that simply require yes\no & lots of pauses to let seller speak.
Make notes so you can check what they said, & check answer's are the same at viewing.

Definitely get the horse vetted. I personally would want to see the horse sat on and if they refused to sit on the horse at all, I would be very, very wary.
 
Always a risk buying from the field, yes to a 5 stage vetting and then insure as soon as its home!

In the digital age they might have exisiting vids they can share too!

Just dont want to miss out on a good horse by being too cautious yet not get stung as like most can't afford a lame horse!

I agree with this - most sane horses can be ridden from the field even after being turned away, and I would insure before it is brought home :)
