hey all

so those don't know i took delivery of my new horse on monday (16hh friesian gelding) but just out of curiosity was wondering a few things.
1/ i am going to start riding him on tuesday do you think that is a nice settling period for him?
2/ how long do you think it will take for him to know who i am.
3/ any words of wisdom.

Now this is the third time i have brought a horse 1st was on trial 2nd tried to kill me and so this time i want to do everything right as i love him he is such a sweetie

1. I don't give horses time to settle any more. If they have been out to competitions then they are used to being ridden in different places, and I like mine to just get on with their job! Not to say that's what you should do, it's just my way, so just ride when you want to.

2. As long as you're the one bringing the feed, then he'll know who you are pdq!

3. Enjoy your new horse!

1) More than enough of a settling in period! I was mean and rode Mazzie hours after she came home, and rode Genie the day after she arrived.

2) Honestly no idea.... They do tend to learn who feeds them pretty quickly though!

3) Enjoy your horse!!!

I wouldn't wait that long to ride him - unless you are waiting for tack of course!

When I got my boy last year he was delivered on Friday and we went out on the Saturday and rode pretty much everyday since. Best way to get them into a routine - especially if he is on trial don't waste anytime just crack on!!

My youngster was delivered on the friday night from wales - the first time she had been in a trailer & i rode her saturday afternoon. I just couldn't wait to sit on her again & see what she was like

She soon learned who fed her. With her i bonded in a matter of weeks. With my first horse Sov i would say it was a full 18 months until we fully bonded, but she had not been handled well or much & didn't trust anyone. After that lightbulb moment when she suddenly realised cuddles were to be adored and not detested with had anotehr 18 years of fun.

1. I gave my horse a week to settle before getting on him. It was very important to me that he settled at the yard and with his new field mates.

2. How long's a piece of rope.

3. Go with the flow.....

How exciting!

1. Don't think it's that important horses seem to adapt quickly.

2. Quite quickly from what I've seen especially if you are bringing food.

3. Relax, enjoy and don't beat yourself up over any mistakes.

My latest one came to me on the Monday, I rode her on the Tuesday, she had her jabs on the Wednesday, first shoes on the Thursday, was ridden/worked/did something in hand etc every day that week!

Ibot, I'd get him into his routine asap. No reaon to wait to ride him, but perhaps keep to hacking for a few days, with just a short time in the school if you have to. He'll be happiest once he knows what his routine is and don't worry, everyone who says they soon get to know who feeds them is absolutely right!

Have fun and I hope he works out well for you!

personally it depends on the horse. Some settle very quickly and are not phased by anything so are happy to be ridden as soon as you want, others find moving home stressful and are best left for at least a few days.I rode Candy in the school within a couple of days of getting him as I wanted him to realise what he was expected to do.
Isn't he quite young from what I remember you saying? If so then it is best to try to keep him to the routine he was used to at his old home,so if that means he was ridden daily I would want to get on asap so he has no excuses for misbehaving.
A proper bond takes a long time. Some horses are just really easy going and don't really test you at all, others take months to settle and will test you in every way so it is far better to start as you mean to go on and not be too soft or they will start to walk all over you pretty fast.

i have my ne wboy in routine already he now gets stroppy if i change it!!! He waits at gate at 6 am!!! shouts when my car pulls up and follows me like a dog- all in 3 weeks.

Do whatever youi feeel is right for you xxx

Each horse is different but I would normally ride the day after. Agree with everyone else that he'll soon learn who you are if you feed him, groom him etc. Any piccies?

I'm hoping to look at a Fresian mare this weekend although she's only 4 and I did want something a little older. Will have to think it through.

Good luck with your new boy.
