i am going to try a horse that i could potentially share/part loan. i am just wondering what questions should i ask when i go?
thank you
thank you
Yep..
How many days/how long for/any specific riding requests e.g. schooling at least once a week
How much notice you have to give about what days you'll be doing
How much notice for going on holiday/away
How the price varies with how often you ride
Expected to ride out alone or with the owner
What chores and when
Will you ever have to do chores for the owner if he/she's away
Poo-picking - how often/how much
How is horse to catch/handle/turn out
Does horse lead/hack alone/jump
Is there going to be a trial period
Will owner go out with you on first few rides
Expectations about how available you'll be in case of emergency
Also if you're ill and it's wet are you expected to go down and do chores and feed even if you don't ride and does this change the price
A lot but hope that gives you some idea. Hopefully these questions will naturally come to you as you need the answer! I always ask about previous loaners, how they got on with the horse/pony, any problems they encountered. Hopefully the owner will be nice and helpful and tell you all this stuff. Good luck!
thank youAlso ask about
- facilities and rules of yard (e.g. can you use arena, opening times, can you bring a friend with you if they don't have rider insurance?)
- is horse insured? (if you get attached you'll care about it having vet treatment but you shouldn't have to pay)
thank youOne thing to be careful of is however nice the horse is don't go for it if the owner is a bit hard to get hold of or unreliable, you need somebody very rational and easy to get on the end of the phone if you run into trouble!
