I need to sort out my youngsters mane, dont want to pull it as he is really young and dont want to put him off, so have opted for solo this time, now question, when you have back combed the mane do you cut at the crest or the required length please...

Just pull it, will be harder when hes older and bigger as not used to it, go on be brave

I always solo comb by cutting at the crest just as you would whn pulling so it does thin the mane and shorten it just as pulling would do but without hurting the horse. I would solo comb the youngsters mane, it's much nicer for him and when done properly can look just as nice as a pulled mane. If you force him to let you pull it and he doesn't like it you may end up having issues even with combing his mane. Then again he may not be bothered, some horses put up with having their manes pulled but i'm sure they'd be happier if it weren't.

I have never pulled a mane as I'm also a bit of a wimp, plus my old boy hated it and would rear, and at my old yard I saw a mare be twitched sedated and held down while her mane was pulled and the lady doing it was screaming at her and smacking her as she wouldn't stand still :O
I have always used solo combs or failing that normal scissors and done my best. My old boy had a really thick mane, but I very rarely plaited so it didn't bother me in the slightest.
I probably haven't helped (sorry!) but just wanted to share my opinion.

yes agree with painted lady, also do it over a few week not all in one day so is always growing.solos v good if used prop.

With a solo comb I cut it at the crest, if you cut it at the length you want it then by the time you have finished it lookes like you have hacked it with the scissors. It will thin it aswell but so does pulling so imo if you cut it at the crest the end result will look like a pulled mane

If you pull it slowly and quetly, by the time you have finished it the youngster will be well behaved during for ever more. Plus, pulled properly the once at a young age and you will never need to do it fully again - just nick a few hairs out now and then.
As for Solo Combs - my only advice is to chuck it in the bin. Damn things should be banned, where has all the skill gone?
