If someone wants to register as an owner with BE (ie. non-competing, no desire to receive any of the bumpf, just wants to be listed as owner at events) do they pay the full individual price of £140? And if it were two people ie. husband and wife they'd have to pay a joint membership of £190 or whatever it is?

If so I appreciate that that's what it is and it's like it or lump it but a non-competing membership is £42, £100 cheaper

Next question. Can someone be listed as the owner of a horse for FEI events without being registered as the owner on BE?

I thought the non-competing one was specifically because it makes no sense to be a full member just to be an owner?

I have no idea about the second question as I can only dream of sending the FEI hundreds of pounds of my hard earned cash ;)

Oddly the FEI one should be simpler/cheaper as rider and horse reg are only about £15 each. Bargain of the century!

I may have to ring BE on Monday for this one, was just hoping that someone might know. I thought that the non-competing one was for people who liked eventing, wanted to be involved (have a vote etc.) and get in free to most events but just not to ride?

According to rule book only a full member, syndicate or joint owner membership can own a horse.

I've run several horses BE under my name/registration that weren't technically owned by me. The owners at the time weren't bothered in the slightest so it didn't make sense to shell out.

The £140 fee just to have your name down as the owner is ridiculous in my opinion as there are so few (no?) benefits.
I raised it on the BE forum a couple of years ago and was told the owner package was being looked into but that most BE members are owner/riders according to their stats. Well they would be, wouldn't they given that so many of us owners are saying to the rider, register the horse in your name and we'll spend the difference on extra training etc. Don't think BE are in the slightest bit bothered.

Ouch, I was hoping they'd sorted it as I've had horses registered under riders' names before. This time I thought I'd like to be registered as the owner but £140? *chokes* I suppose it might perhaps give me some incentive to actually compete . . . if I had a suitable horse for my ability:( New lad is far too good for me, mind you daughter's big semi-retired mare is behaving in a manner suggesting she might need to be taken out and jumped:D

They havent sorted it because the marketing manager at the time (non horsey )looked at the figures saw that most were owner riders so thought it was not an issue .
How they could not see that these figures were highly distorted is beyond me .
I even told them that if they brought in say a fifty pound owners membership their income would increase.

It is a shame - I have someone willing to support one of my horses this year and would like it to run in their name as a thank-you. They're not particularly interested in the sport and apart from coming to see the horse compete on the odd occasion are unlikely to have any other involvement in BE whatsoever. However at that price I cannot justify either recommending to them that they pay it or paying it myself as a thank-you to them.

This is such a bug bear of mine. I even emailed BE this week about. Still haven't had a reply mind you ;)

I've been offered the chance to event a horse. Owner has said it absolutely must be registered with her as the owner....fair enough. She does not require any of the additional benefits of the membership just wants to see her name in the programme.

Problem is she cannot afford the full membership cost. So my choice is to either pay for her membership or not BE the horse.

I'm not moaning about the owner, its her horse and her perogative to state that she wants to be listed as the owner....it just seems unfair that she/I have to fork out for benefits she will never use :(

The more and more I read about BE, the more convinced I am, that from my outside perspective at least, it is a complete utter rip off. A fortune for events you might not get into, ground you might not run on, venues you'll
Have to travel miles for and only one (? 2 ?) championships to qualify for. Ho hum, BS and RC eventing for me for ever it would seem :(

This ownership lark seems almost the worst part! Where it not for owners there would be no sport- and think of the opportunities for encouragement if someone is welcomed to own at PN/ N level to make the move up to bigger things!!

Does sound like your owner is being a bit pedantic tbh... It really makes no difference at all.

I am riding this season for an owner, but according to BE I will be the horses owner. £140 is just crazy and most owners (unless they have cash to burn ) would rather pay for more training / events for the horse than have their name on a schedule and called over a tannoy. But each to their own.

I know lots and lots of riders/owners who do it this way. BE are missing out on a trick by not having a "non-riders, owners" membership for a smaller fee.

At least BE let junior (U18) riders - who are now full members anyway - own their own horses so I don't have to pay a full membership for myself as well just so that daughter can event - unlike BS where I do have to be a full member too!
