Quick curb chain question...

Hooks on the outside, and curb chain goes through bit rings, or hooks on the inside, and everything stays to the inside?

Asking because the open hook is very open and will likely poke into ponys mouth if kept to the inside.

WHat are you using? Pelham? Double?

Never through the bit rings. If a pelham, hooks on the cheekpeice ring facing out and run directly under curb groove with two fingers space between horse and chain. Always use curb lip strap.

It's a kimberwick, and there is no connection for a lip strap (and the tack shop didn't even have alternative curbs other than the chains on the bits, (as I really just wanted a leather or elastic curb) never mind a lip strap!)

For me, everything inside - never had a problem.

Others go through bit rings.

On the inside, if the bit is correctly fitted the hook should be well out of the way of the mouth, you can use pliers to make it less open and less risk of it coming undone when you are riding. A photo to show how the curb chain should lie once done up, there will be no lip strap to help keep it in the right place.

You won't have a lip strap on a Kimblewick.
i always put a curb through bit rings as per Tern, for a Pelham tho not for a double or Kimblewick

Ah yes a kimblewick, one of my favourite bits ever. So, no you won't be able to use a lipstrap.

Still, never through the bit as it interferes with the curb action and will move the curb out of place and the curb is there to keep the bit in place in order for it to work as a lever bit and exert poll pressure. If you put it through the bit, it will slide up with the bit when you use the reins and negates any benefit. Plus, I can't imagine a more painful way to use such a curb bit.

Through the bit rings on a pelham?? I was taught never to do this. What is the benefit and how would the mechanism work?

Sits flat, softer and less contact to the groove. Try it on your wrist both ways, taking up the reins, to feel the difference of effect on just that 1 point.
As was taught to me by Sybil Smith, David Tatlow, and a few others.

Yes I can imagine. BUt the whole point of the curb is that it levers off a point.. the curb. You've then moved it and "softened" the effect... why use a pelham on the first place? The beauty of it is that you can use it very lightly and it has a great effect. It wasn't intended as a handbrake like so many people seem to use it for.

Because the Pelham was the next step from the Kimblewick, but the Kimblewick was not as acceptable in the show ring, hence a slightly stronger bit but with a softer movement
