Pony has a massively thick coat this year and the smallest guard leaves most of the hair on. Can I go without? Have done so before but my non- horsey mother claimed it was mean ?

As above.
None of my horse clippers have ever had guards, but without knowing exactly what you're referring, we're probably not well-placed to advise

thanks for confirming :) I'd do without the guard, particularly as right now it's going to grow back pretty quick too anyway.

I wouldn't do a body clip with guards if you paid me! It would be impossibly fiddly to get an even result. If she's that concerned about leaving some hair on, tell her to buy you some clippers with Covercote blades, which leave the hair a bit longer.

Ended up using the 6mm guard because the difference was tiny after I had gone over it a few times. Thank you for the input- I’ll probably take the guard of for his feathered legs and face
