Hi all

Just having a few wobbles about pony’s fitness to compete this weekend and any advice appreciated please

He has been eventing (and happily making the XC time in both) all season about 2 a month and competed at 90 last Sunday and due to event as part of a team this Sunday.

Came in from the field on Monday with a scrape (not broken the skin) and a very loose fluid filled hematoma between his chest about 3 inches wide. I have no idea how he did it and showed no pain response to it but it was there for a reason like a bruise so he has been rested all week, had lots of arnica on it and in him as well as medicated cream . Hematoma has more or less dispersed now and he still shows no pain / reaction to the area.

Rode him yesterday to make sure he wasn’t sore - he didn’t seem it so will ride again today but do you think he will lost any fitness to go out tomorrow?

No he won't have lost any significant fitness to compete - but he might return a positive dope test. The withdrawal time is 10 days. If it is low grade / local you are "only" cheating. But if there is a risk of being tested you owe it to the team to tell them.

Under the rules we are competing I checked it would be ok in the circumstances

Did you know that under scientific tests, arnica has been proven to have absolutely no efficacy whatsoever, so you're wasting your time and money giving it to him. Also, it is in large quantities, a poison so although you're probably not doing him any harm personally I wouldn't be feeding it to any animal of mine.

He won't have lost any fitness if he already had a good level of fitness established

Good luck!

Oh I didn’t know that! It’s such a flipping minefield

What’s the banned ingredient? Maybe my app isn’t up to date! Assuming it’s controlled not banned and it’s running under BEF here’s the info about getting the paperwork in order:
