Quick Flick update..... but no news!

I went to the vets tonight - they said it was very unlikely to be diabetes, as usually the production of ketones only occurs when the disease is quite well developed, by which time she would be showing other symptoms (drinking/peeing a lot, shaking) As it is, she is the picture of health at the moment

I have to take a urine sample tomorrow morning (she refused to pee before I took her to the vets tonight, how typical

) and they will test it to make absolutely sure.

The vet did look at me as if I was rather mad when I explained why I was there

- but hey ho, better to be safe than sorry

I posted earlier saying her breath smelt funny, and 3 people replied saying that it could be a sign of diabetes. So I panicked (naturally)

No - it smelt like antiseptic to me

The vet couldnt smell it, but she said only about 50% of people can smell ketones anyway and she wasnt one of them

Maybe you're like me Acolyte, I have more than once came when they are so early in the disease that they're not always ill enough for treatment.


On other hand I've also had animals acting like a dying swan at home, only to look like the perfect picture of health once at the vet.clinic.

I've checked with my books, it says that bad breath in general could be tooth-problem, sweet breath could be diabetes, ammonia breath could be sign of kidney problem. So definitely worth investigating to me.

The vet said that if the urine sample didnt show anything they could also do a blood test, but she seemed very unconcerned and said that Flick's teeth were in good condition so it wasnt the usual teeth problems which greyhounds get a lot.

she hasn't been doing the Atkins Diet has she? I would check out the neighbourhood for lurking boy dogs, she could be upstairs having a quick gargle now
