Have you ever used Keratex Mud Powder (please say whether it worked if yes)

My OH thinks I am being melodramatic, that the hat is just scratched and I don't need to replace it. So, after the fall I had on Sunday, would you replace your hat or not? (BTW I know what I am going to do, just interested in whether I am being melodramatic or not!!)

I wont vote on this, mainly because I prob wouldnt replace it and when I fell off last year and landed on my head, I didnt replace that hat and still wear it now!

if the hat hit the deck, replace it. i've been told it should be replaced even if you just drop it from a couple of feet up.
it's not worth the risk otherwise. sorry if it was an expensive one, but what price your marbles?

Is it poss to take it to someone to have it looked over? If it was me, TBH I prob would not replace it, if you had fallen onto something rock hard then I would have done (but I have not seen the hat

What sort of fall did you have?

My last two falls I didn't land on my hat (bottom and face). So I won't replace as no chance of it being damaged.

However if I clonked my noggin quite hard I would consider it. At least on the old style hats you could see and hear when they were knackered!!

Piteched out the side door onto my head! I have a bruise all across my forehead, and the hat either has a deep scratch or a crack in it. It was a gatehouse HS1, so not exactly cheap, but I don't want to risk it personally. OH says it looks fine and I am spending money for the sake of it...so I said 'nice to see you care about my welfare' and left for work in a huff. (Proper grown up me!)

If you look for my Goring Novice post, there is a nice video attached to it of said fall!

A point I also made to him! Trouble is, you can't see the bruise, so he thinks I am over-exaggerating I think!

I'm going to buy one anyway, I would have bought one at the event if they'd had my size in stock, just wondered if people thought it was being over-cautious or not....

i think you're spot on. a hat doesn't have to look damaged to be damaged... the foam stuff inside can be squashed and so won't cushion a blow next time, even though it looks alright from the outside.
i think your OH is being a bit daft, tbh. stick to your guns.

I said no but had I of landed on my head then definitely replace your hat, esp if you are eventing where the risk of a fall is possibly higher than in other disciplines?

Personally I would replace the hat, but then keep the old one for a spare... I cracked my skull cap falling off on a road, and now only use it when I'm riding my mum's carthorse and it's raining. I certainly wouldn't risk wearing it for jumping.

I hope your head isn't too sore.

you hit your head in the fall hard enough to damage the outside, my bet would be that the inside has done its job and absorbed the majority of the concusion and is now going to be pretty useless. Yes it was an expensive hat but your head is irreplaceable.

When you buy your new one I suggest you get your O/H to hit the old one very hard with a hammer, then rip the lining etc out of it and show him the state of the inner. I did this with an old skull cap and it made interesting viewing. Try as I might I struggled to damage the outer shell, the inner revealed a very different story.

I have voted, a YES my daughter got a kick to the helmet, full on, gave her concussion for two days, knocked her semi-concious, and the hat looks as though it has a U shaped scratch

When I feel inside I can make out the sort of foamy-firm stuff has come away and is loose in a circle shape.

Replace it , part of most hats is a layer of shock absorbing foam that once it's done it's job and compressed to absord the shock does not bounce back to it's original state. Hence next fall it will be your head not your hat absorbing the shock.

I had a hat from one of my two mega falls looked perfect could find a fault with it. Unless you put in on a flat surface and pressed the top then it just folded flat. No use to anyone.

Being a chartered engineer my OH could bore you to death with energy absorption graphs....you are not being melodramatic it is scientific fact that materials are weakened by impact. Your hat did it's job in saving your head but it wouldn't be up to impact again.
New one - and if your OH wants to see graphs then I can supply

but somehow I think he would rather give you his credit card

Does it scare you that my OH is not only a chartered engineer too, but also works on safety tests for aero engines?!!!

It is my birthday in a couple of weeks....

Thankfully defence aerospace, so I am less worried when we go on hols. He tells me horror stories I do not need to hear though!!

Don't suppose yours works for RR too does he?!

Ha, maybe they know each other! You've just given away my location? What if people who hate me hunt me down and kill me??

Seriously, don't ask questions - not only is it dull, but when it isn't dull, it is terrifying!

Yes, well, OH was at the midlands site for a couple of years....then transferred as we both wanted to be in the SW! I was in northampton for a while too - hated it! The SW is great - you'll have to get him to move into defence aerospace from commercial!
