What are you actually supposed to do when you "give and retake the rains"???

Please help??

quite literally give and retake the reins

eg: give and retake reins over x, over x allow horsie to take the reins supposedly should stay in self carrage, (buster normally uses it as an excuse to spook!) dont slip reins just give them to ur horse!

hope that makes sense!

I'm thinking it will be quite easy (I hope!!!!) so should just be a fun outing for us. I say he hasn't had any prep but he was jumping 4' + walls two weeks ago so a few 95cm SJ's and XC jumps should be a breeze - although obviously it doesn't really work like that!

Are you off to Osberton starbucks? If you are i'll see you there! XC looks loooooovely can't wait for it, but the showjumping might be a challenge for me lol

You need to lift your hand slightly and push it forward so that your reins become slack and you release the contact for 2-4 strides over which ever marker. Your horse should remain in self carriage and the rhythm of the trot/canter shouldn't alter.
Good Luck.

the Pros tend to push their hands quite exaggeratedly up and forward for a few strides, the reins should go slightly loose (but a lot don't!) to show that the horse is in self-carriage and won't fall on his nose or zoom off or something the moment you release the reins forward. ann-jen's explanation is perfect.

Make sure that there actually is some loss of contact as it is quite easy to just lift your hands but not lose the contact - which doesn't count as give and retake.

Have fun!
