hi
i posted on here in sept, when i just got my foal, he is now 8 months old, he has been in everynight since we got him, just because he was so young, but as its warming up, im wanting him to be out alot more nw, as hes been restricted to the school as fields have been getting fix'd, but he will be in at night until spring time, so im looking for a combo rug for him, best luck ive found was teh rhinegold on ebay, but it doesnt have a hood, does any1 know of any good sites, im not wanting to spend loads as hes growing so quick, also, hw much hay should he be getting per night? is 1 leaf for night and 1 leaf during the day ok?

thanks
alex

Post if you know what size he is, you might find there is somebody near who who has one you could borrow for a couple of months before he outgrows it.

I would offer more hay at night - you don't want him to run out.

his current stable combo stable rug is 3ft9 and is getting short, so ideally 4ft or even 4ft3?
he always has loads of hay, will he be ok out ? all my others are out all year round at my other yard, but at teh 1 he is for sum reason i feel dif, mby cuz she has all hers in lol

hi
i would try looking for something second hand as i have had my horse since he was born and now at 3 and a half and a rug size 6'9!!!!! i have every size but not a combo. he started off at a 5'3 and i got a cuddly pony one as they fit really nicely. if you cant find any second hand, i got most of my rugs from robinsons and derby house. derby house have a sale on at the moment for rugs so worth a look.

Hi, i have found that the Rambo and Amigo rugs have been a better fit for my youngster as he's quite narrow chested and they don't seem to be a deep.
The Masta and Weatherbeeta just slip back but would be better for a bigger foal.
I have got most of mine off Ebay and i try and sell them back on Ebay to purchase the next one.
In 4 months my baby has gone from a 5'3" to a 5'9" and i'm currently looking towards a 6' in the next couple of weeks.
The trouble of this time of year the rug is either too heavy or light for the weather in the size he fits in?!!?
I have also found that my youngster is naturally warm and apart from the really cold nights has got away with wearing a Medium Weight. I'd rather use layers than one heavy rug that while they are growing will prob only use a couple of times.
Mine also comes in at night so i have found that he doesn't need a neck cover as his fur and mane keep his neck warm and you can always towel dry when he comes in at night?

As for the hay - when you say "leaf" are you talking about a small "normal size" bale? You need to weigh it because every bale is different and each slice differs in weight.
My vet advised me to feed adlib hay to avoid tummy probs also told me to feed the same qtys as an adult.
Horses are designed to trickle feed and graze for up to 18hrs a day and shouldn't go for long periods without food.
I'd increase his night hay to at least 2/3 slices.

Is he having any feed?

My youngster was having a stud pellet until he was 12 months and then went on to a young stock pellet and will be until he's 18 months making sure he was getting the vits and mins he needs whilst growing.

Spillers have a fantastic, free feed helpline and will advise on both the hay and feed rations.

Good luck
