OK so the plunge has been taken, the winter BD membership has been done and we've provisionally entered our first competition for the beginning of October (no bling jokes please, I've heard them all already! ;)).

However I need to get to November the 14th without acquiring any points so that I can be on our RC team.

How do the points work and how can I compete without getting any (other than forgetting my test, cantering on the wrong leg, turning up in a grackle etc. etc.)?

You can do classes as training but not many centres let you win anything , the only use is you can use the sheets for Pet plan area festivals. Music classes don't carry points and also prelim don't. Other than that all class will carry points as soon as you get over 60%

Yes do Prelims. Though bit of a waste as you could have done them without being a member  though you can do Restricted section rather than open otherwise.

Or go in really high level class where you will struggle to get over 60%:p

Ah. Thank you. I've entered a Prelim and a Novice so if I either change the Novice entry to 'training' or enter 2 Prelims instead I should be OK? It's the only one I plan to do before the RC thingy and they are running 2 prelims so I should maybe just do those.

I'd like to say that we'll definitely get over 60% but that would be inviting a succesion of 55% tests!

I'll enter a prelim and a medium instead then? :p

It's not a waste as the membership runs Oct-Mar regardless (not from when you join like the BS membership) so whether I join in September or December it costs the same and only runs until March 1st.

the only thing you should do is check your rider grading-if you've competed in an intermediate you are automatically a grade 6 rider so you have to go in open section of novice

I *think* they've changed it and it now says 'completed' rather than 'competed' - and my intermediate record comprises of R's so I should be ok, but I'll check. Thanks for the heads-up.

h) A rider who has competed at Intermediate horse trials since 1st April 1994 may not be below a Group 6 rider.

Extract from online rulebook page 12.
Competed is in bold so maybe they have just changed it back? Think the changes are put in bold?

It used to be had gained points but I thought that they had changed it to competed-should have kept it as got points

Think I'd better ring them as I've definitely competed at Int but not got any points. Damn. The form I've sent off said 'gained points' but maybe they didn't change forms when they changed the rulebook. I don't want to do open sections, they're too hot round here!

Oh dear god, the plot thickens. I've just rung BD who said that the application form is wrong and it IS 'competed at Intermediate' so I have to be a Group 6 rider. Does this mean that I can't do prelim at all?

You can ride in the Open prelim section, but it depends what level eventing your horse has competed at aswell as think this will affect whether you can do prelim or not.

If i was you and didnt want to get points i would just enter HC or Training for each class.

Thanks for your help. Oh well, open prelim it is. I only can't get points before November 14th, after that it's fine.

It's a bit of a shame that a barely-average numpty like me with a 5yo horse has to be in Open sections because of a couple of pretty unsuccessful Ints a couple of years ago but I've no-one to blame but myself and we'll just have to improve instead and beat the open riders at their own game :D.

I presume I have to do Open Novice as well. Can I go back to Restricted at Elementary?

Who'd have thought dressage would be so complicated? ;) I thought that having to change nosebands was going to be the sum of my worries! :p

Yup, I saw that too. I suspect I might find that my credit card has been charged for £64 not £60 .

I would put money on it!!;)
I suppose their point must be that you have ridden the dressage bit of Intermediate (after all they are not going to care about XC phase :p) You are just going to have to wow them in the open sections then!

I did get 35 in an intermediate dressage once , following Ruth Edge in who got 32. Maybe there's hope for me yet?. I could do the XC, it was the SJing that I never quite got my head round! ;)

Well if it's anything like my membership forms - they sent the whole lot back last week (even though I'd sent them in early being extra organised so I could enter early October competitions). I did mention to them that they'd had it since August so could someone not have checked it over earlier to ensure they had all of the correct information, then rung me to let me know it was wrong rather than returning everything, would they mind updating their website and downloadable forms - oh yes and should I return the completely different persons forms (containing all of their bank details) that they'd included in my envelope......:rolleyes:

(GB - I think you'll find it's £68 not £64.....)

Oh dear god. Is there ANY chance that I will be registered and ready to go in a fortnight?

And did you, perchance, chose your avatar the day you had your dealing with BD HQ? I've been trying to check some things on their website today and, having worked perfectly last night, it won't let me near the bits I want today *borrows M_M's head-banging smiley*.

Are they usually this bad or are they just stressed out by a sudden influx of eventers?

Aw rubbish. Just found out that I can't qualify for regionals or area festivals at prelim either :(. Oh well, best go out now and work on Nov stuff .

OO i had real problems navigating the BD website, goin round and round in circles trying to change from one type of membership to renewing my riding membership, and adding new horse. Took ages to finally work out that you cant reg horse on the same day online!!! Thought it was just my blondness, but seems the whole thing, including interaction with representitives from bd is overly complicated and/or is inaccurate, and requires you to have a MENSA membership card before you try and do anything!!!
