Am I too old school - has the trend changed in recent years?

Just been chatting to some others in another thread and it is absolutely astonishing me; so can you please vote on this poll to see whether I am totally out of touch with what other people do.

I read that as 'Am I too old to school', I thought, she's not that old.

Farrier I dont, but mainly because pickle really doesnt give a dam whats going on with the farrier and is quite happy to just almost sleep so farrier just tells us he doesnt need holding if we do because he is good

Vet yep he is normally held if not by me then by someone else. Allthough as said above because he is so good they sometimes just say there is no need

ticked yes in both catagories.

seems rude not to.

the guy is paid to provide the service of "farriery" not horse management!

the vet too.....though obviously not in farriery! lol!

Always there for the vet, need to know what they say! I am always there for farrier, apart the last time. He text me saying leave Chex in and he'd do him in the afternoon - I wasn't happy about leaving him in to be done, but farrier insisted

he's been shoeing him for years though and is brilliant with him.

Put no to farrier as they are happy(usually) to be shod whilst tied up on yard but I am there in the event horse prats about.
I (or someone)would hold for vet but will try hard to do it myself as hate second hand information on prognosis or treatment.

Seems I may be in the minority then. Every single horse I have is perfect for the farrier, even the little weanlings.....however I hold my horses out of respect and courtesy to my farrier.

So, it seems that everyone holds their horse for the vet......so why do you hold your horse for the vet and not for the farrier? Do you respect your vet more than your farrier?

I'm definatley always there for the vet and most of the time for the farrier but like tomorrow my farrier is nipping in when he has time to put shannon's shoe back on so i won't be there then, but i trust him completely and know that she is good.

I was there the first time horse was shod by the new farrier, to make sure that I was happy and that he was too. I now leave horse in its stable and he helps himself, but he also does 5 or 6 from my yard in one day.
TBH If I could, I would be there, but he comes on a weekday when I am at work, and it could be at any time of the day so I have to leave it to him, but I trust him and I know that my horse is well behaved for the farrier.
Dentist, I do the same, but a friend is there for me and she is a professional groom.
Vet - I will be there without fail, as usually its somehting I want to be there for.

Also, I know it sounds a cop out, but when the horse was eventing and the roadwork that she was doing meant I got 3 weeks out of a set of shoes, I was there for shoeing as I wanted to talk to farrier about studs, foot balance etc etc, but now its just a trim as she is retired and barefot, I'm not so bothered to be there.

All my horses are fab to be shod, but i do out of respect hold any new/young horse (like when snoop was first done).

However, farrier said to me the next time that he was fine if i didnt come down (as usually on a thursday and i have to take time out of work) because he was happy that new addition was good enough to do so I normally just pop down and check all is fine etc.

The vet however, they seem to insist on you holding the horse for them, plus they are usually being injected or needing running up etc

I don't actually hold my horse for the farrier as he is so good, but me or YO always greet the farrier and put the kettle on!

Hold for the vet as never sure what's he's going to do!

Depends on the horse. We had the school horses, and a large number of the liveries done at the same time each week (obviously each one would only be done every 5-6 weeks if you get my meaning) There was always someone around to hold if necessary, but most of them were popped in a stall with a haynet and didn't bat an eyelid. With the vet, someone used to be around to hold the horse, trot up, assist with dressing, hold legs, pass instruments etc - generally the vet was something they were less used to, although I know several liveries who didn't bother to turn up for routine jabs etc - I think they thought he was a big enough chap to managed to jab a horse! (I didn't mind helping if we were asked in advance tho)

Depends - will if I am around, or there is a big concern, but I am one of the few who trust the people who I pay to service my horse, so I am not really concerned if they do it themselves.

I would always be present when farrier was there but if the horses stood well when tied up on their own then I felt it fine to faff about in the next stable or make tea etc.
I find it easier to let him get on with it to be honest especially if horse is just going to sleep!

I am always there when the vet is because I want to hear what he has to say.

yes for both, although my farrier is happy to shoe mine alone. Lady was really nervous, used to have to be doped to be shod, now is great to shoe but I prefer to be around. Fudge has the attention span of a gnat and sometimes gets the odd well deserved clump from the farrier, so I'm there when he is shod as he's better behaved if he's held.

If I have to hold the horse farrier cannot have his cup of coffee and biscuits which I usually make while shoeing. So its a no and same for vet. Only time I hold horse for vet is lameness examinations on trot ups.
In fact only person I do hold horse for is horse dentist as horse is doped up to eyeballs and head is on one of those head rest things so cannot be tied up.

interesting post.

my old horse wasn't held for farrier but new one is as i take her to remedial farrier. old horse would fall asleep.

def yes for a vet as it's usually for teeth, injections or trot ups etc...

I do think people respect vets more than farriers though in all honesty - not sure quite why though.

I do that to, so suppose I'm not technically holding them. I'm usually following the farrier around showing him all the things I've been worrying about with his feet lol. I do the same with the vet though, if I'm asking him about various things I leave Chex with the rope over his neck while I show the vet the things that are wrong with him, and wait while he explains things. Chex just stands there though!

I'll always he somebody there when the girls are beingshod becase Storm can be a sod and I'd rather not add a 6th farrier to the list of farriers that won't touch her with a barge pole

I'll always hold the horses for the vet.

Depends what the vet is doing. May just tie it up so I can look at horse as well. But will hold if needed. If we are at home will go down to the yard to get horse out of stable and get them a cup of tea/coffee however often they come when we are out so he takes the horse out of the stable to tie up. The farrier has been known to go into the field to get our horses when we forget hes coming! (plus he can be a bit unreiblable and your not always sure when he will turn up!)

Kind of yes and yes.

Always for the vet. I do start holding her for farrier and she is head-collared with lead rope...over her neck whilst I gossip...

She just stands there and doesn't move... We hold the evil one though, but have to say she loves this farrier, didn't like the old one.

Never ever held any of the hunters for either, I am big on manners, and if they can stand to tie they can stand to shoe- sorry if this offends, but it is the way I am. My coloured is troubled and drops to a quivering bundle at the sight of the farrier- or at least that was last year's story, so I had to hold him. I still stand with him now but he has improved 100% and I believe in another 3monthes he will tie to shoe.
